The Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa is located in the North Georgia Mountains near the town of Young Harris, which offers the perfect location for Southeast USA explorers.

It’s just south of the North Carolina border, and a two-hour drive from Metro Atlanta, Chattanooga in Tennessee, and Asheville in North Carolina.

Activities at Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa

As soon as you step into the foyer with its oak-vaulted ceilings, panoramic views of the mountains, and comfortable couches with inviting games and puzzles beside a massive stone fireplace, you’ll know you’ve arrived at a place that knows how to perfectly blend rustic luxury with outdoor adventurous beauty.

Whether you’re looking for relaxation, outdoor adventure, natural beauty, or fine dining, all interests are covered.

You may think this is the place for romantic getaways or golfing trips – it is that – but it’s also a special destination for families as well.

We spent a wonderful three-days here in partnership with Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa on our Georgia road trip.

Below are the many wonderful activities you can enjoy at Brasstown including a few nearby attractions and experiences.

What we loved about our stay at Brasstown was the easy access to many different activities on the property.

Only a few steps from our room lead us to fun memory making experiences for us to share and talk about forever. 

1. Relax at The Equani Spa

You cannot visit Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa without spending time at Equani Spa, a sanctuary for healing and restoration.

Equani means “Ridges” in local Cherokee, as the spa is located on Cherokee land who originally sought the land’s healing power. The Spa has carefully integrated design elements and activities indigenous to the tribe’s culture.

Many of the body treatments at Equani are inspired by the Cherokee heritage, which has been blessed by former Chief of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians, Joyce Dugan who says,

“Native people throughout this country have often been dishonored through misrepresentation of our cultural/traditional beliefs and customs, so it was with great relief and pleasure for me to visit The Equani Spa and witness for myself the tasteful and elegant representations of the Cherokee culture.”

From relaxation rooms to outside decks with hot tubs and forest views, you will have the serenity and disconnect you yearn for.

Lay back, sip on a mimosa, and have time to reflect. Then choose the treatment you love most.

Craig and I relaxed with a couples massage. Savannah enjoyed her pedicure and sparkling blue toes, and Kalyra and I had our first facials together – it will not be our last!

2. Take Golf Lessons with a Pro

I always thought that with golf, you either had it or you don’t. I stayed away from the greens, because clearly, I did NOT have it.

On my first game of golf many years ago, I threw down the club after hole three, heading straight for Hole 19 exclaiming how stupid it was.

At Brasstown Valley Golf Course I learned that while natural golfing talent is a thing, you can also learn how to swing a club AND connect to the ball to make it travel high and far.

When you have lessons with a golf pro, anything is possible.

One of my favorite activities at Brasstown Valley Resort, surprisingly, was our golf lesson with Steve Phelps, the resort’s Director of Golf and PGA Professional.

He helped me make sense of golf with his explanations of golf clubs and how they work, the perfect design of golf balls, and how to properly swing a golf club and hit the ball.

Steve was patient, kind, and supportive with specific feedback to how I was swinging (incorrectly!). With each new correction, I started to GET it, improve, and work on that muscle memory.

Most importantly, I started hitting the ball better AND began to actually consider that perhaps golf could be something I COULD enjoy and take up.

I mean, is there a more beautiful setting for an outdoor leisurely activity?

Craig, being the more natural sportsman, has always been able to hit the ball relatively straight and far, but not as consistently as he’d like and he’s never had a golf lesson before, so was looking forward to the tips and insights to improve his game.

With a few adjustments from Steve regarding his grip, stance, and backswing, he was hitting the ball more consistently, and as he likes to say, he likes golf, but LOVES it when he’s hitting his drives straight and getting his putts in! 

3. Play a Round of Golf at Brasstown Valley Golf Course

Realizing my golfing limitations, I sped off on the golf cart after our lesson at the driving range, and left Craig to play a few holes with his new golfing friends without my air swings impeding their fun.

One day, I’ll feel confident to join them.

The Brasstown Valley Golf Course has 18 holes of championship golf for all levels of play.

Both Golf Digest and Leading Golf Courses of America ranked Brasstown Valley Golf Course as one of the top golf courses in Georgia.

If you don’t want to play a round of golf, grab yourself a cocktail, stand on the lodge verandah and admire the beauty of the course while you watch others swing away merrily.

4. Horseback Riding at the Stables at Brasstown Valley

Horseback riding is a family adventure we often seek out when we travel and talk about long after the trip has ended.

The horses at the Stables at Brasstown Valley were the prettiest I’ve ever ridden. My palomino horse, Hermann, was my dream horse as a child and his willful, confident personality delighted me.

As soon as we finished our ride, Savannah shared with me her savings plan to one day buy the horse she rode, eBay.

Brasstown Stables has five miles of horse trails winding through hardwood forests, through open fields and beside crystal-clear streams. Let’s not forget the mountain views at every turn.

The Stables primarily offer one and two-hour guided mountain trail rides, accommodating all experience levels, from beginner to advanced.

5. Hiking the Appalachian Mountains

Enjoy the beauty of the hardwood forest, flowering plants, mountain scenery, and wildlife viewing by hiking in the Appalachian Mountains.

Brasstown Valley Resort has 9.2-miles of wilderness trails right at your doorstep.

The popular Miller Trek starts at the resort and winds its way into the Chattahoochee National Forest for approximately 6 miles. There is also a shorter 2.5-mile loop.

6. Enjoy the Resort Amenities

You can balance the resort activities with more sedate family time with the resort amenities.

Well, that depends on how rowdy you may get playing a game of air hockey against each other in the Arcade Game room or how many laps you want to do in the indoor pool or seasonal outdoor pool.

I was more content to soak in the hot tubs, steam in the sauna, and lounge on the poolside chairs listening to the birds and soaking up the beauty of the views.

There is also a nightclub, though we didn’t go there, and outdoor tennis courts for those who want to work on their serve.

I was also happy to get a short workout on the treadmill in the fitness center. Running is usually not my thing, but the views of the garden took away all the “pain” of it.

My tip is to head straight for the Equani Spa after your workout!

7. Dining at Brasstown Valley

Enjoy the resort dining room with a signature cocktail before dinner on the verandah with stunning sunset mountain views. 

Martini lovers will be very happy with the diversity of martinis on offer from classic Dirties to dessert-like Godiva Chocolate.

For our kids, the hot chocolates and French Toast were a hit at breakfast time. You can also get a full breakfast if you like to have a big breakfast before exploring.

Move onto outstanding meals at dinner time such as Bang Bang Shrimp for your appetizer and mains with delicious choices like fresh Carolina Mountain Trout, Ribeye, Macadamia Chicken and Shrimp and Grits.

Don’t skimp out on the dessert. Get ready to crack that Creme Brulee or devour a rich (and thick) slice of Triple Chocolate Mousse Cake.

On busier weekend nights, the resort often has seafood and prime rib buffets.

8. Eating at Brassies Grill

Brassies Grill is your 19^th Hole, the more casual dining option for a quick lunch or cozy dinner. Relax at the bar, watch sport on TV, or play a game of pool or darts.

You’ll find favorites such as burgers, blackened quicken quesadillas, beer cheese and pretzels, and chili cheese tots. 

I highly recommend the unique smoked salmon BLT. The mouthwatering salmon is smoked in house.

9. Sit By the Verandah Fire Pit

Wrap up your day in one of our favorite ways – by the crackling fire on the verandah of the Fireside Lounge. It’s perfect for stargazing and conversations.

Rocking chairs line wide verandahs for soaking up an expansive vista that includes Brasstown Bald, Georgia’s highest point.

10. Shop at Pro-Shop & Country Store

Not only can you get all your golfing gear at the Pro-Shop, but you can also find some unique homeware, gifts, and clothes at the Brasstown Valley Country Store.

I was impressed, not just with the quality of products, but the reasonable resort shop price tags.

Downstairs you’ll also find the Emporium, a place to find locally made products such as cheeses, ice cream, wine, and home goods.

Accommodations at Brasstown Valley 

From secluded cottage tranquility to modern suites amidst the hub of activity, Brasstown Valley Resort and Spa has an array of accommodation options to suit the purpose of your getaway.

No matter what accommodation style you choose, you’ll be surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the North Georgia Mountains. 

Lodge Rooms

Our legendary mountain lodge has 102 gorgeous guest rooms, including five, one-bedroom suites. All rooms come with either a queen or king bed, air conditioning, free WiFi, private bathrooms, an in-room safe, an ironing board and iron, and toiletries.

We had interconnecting rooms with a private sitting area in one and two queen beds in the other, both with premium bedding.

It was perfect for our family we love the kind of space that helps us remotely work and learn while we travel.

The gas fireplaces in the rooms were a lovely feature. Some rooms have private balconies. Ours looked over the pool area with great views of the mountains.

The Cottages

The Brasstown Valley cottages are tucked in the woods offering your family seclusion and immediate access to hiking trails and outdoor beauty. They cater to groups of various sizes.

You will love the kitchen, large wood-burning fireplaces in the living area, and the wraparound covered decks bringing you closer to nature.

Equani Spa’s Private Suite

For pure indulgence, why not stay at the private suite on the top level of the Equani Spa?

It’s an 825-square-foot suite with a private deck that has fantastic views of the North Georgia Mountains.

Inside you’ll find a jacuzzi tub and the biggest shower you’ve ever seen. We’re talking about an “experience shower” providing a full-sensory experience with a double-drench shower head, steam, aromatherapy, LED lights, marine speakers, and 12-head Swiss shower bars.

Now that’s a Brasstown Valley moment!

You also have a separate living area and stone stacked gas fireplace in the bedroom. The BEST feature is the short flight of stairs to spa rejuvenation.

Experiences Outside of Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa

You’re in the heart of the Blue Ridge so have endless opportunities to explore outside the Brasstown Valley Resort property.

While we were content to just enjoy what the resort had to offer, we did love experiencing a few nearby attractions.

1. Visit Crane Creek Vineyards

A winery in Georgia? I was just as surprised. It turns out, there are dozens of wineries here, many of them within a short drive from Brasstown Valley. The Crane Creek Vineyards were just a 10 min drive from Brasstown Valley Resort and Spa.

The Southeast is known typically for sweet muscadine wines, which is not my preferred drop.

I was pleased to discover wines at Crane Creek Vineyards that were dry, light, and refreshing, and paired with the kind of views you’d expect to see in Tuscany.

You can choose to enjoy them from the vineyard deck, while wandering past the grapevines, or from the Adirondack chairs in the garden.

Craig and I chose the latter with a tasting flight each – mine heavy on the whites, while Craig’s had a balance in color.

We recommend the Zusa for its light summery flavors of melon and mango. For those wanting more depth and spice, you can’t go past the award-winning red, Hellbender.

Every Friday, May to November, Crane Creek has live music out on the vineyard decks and delicious homemade seasonal appetizers.

Owner Eric Seifarth has created a wine-tasting experience at Crane Creek to replicate the joy he experienced sampling Italian wines while he was stationed in Northern Italy.

2. Go Boating on Lake Chatuge

With over 130-miles of shoreline, Lake Chatuge is one of the larger open bodies of water in the Blue Ridge, Smoky Mountains region.

Its picturesque setting of towering mountains surrounding its distant shores, and access to an abundance of lake recreation activities, make it a popular place for visitors to the region.

We rented a pontoon boat, and a speedboat from the marina to enjoy an hour soaking up the views.

Stay a while longer. Throw in a line, swim, or pack a picnic lunch to eat in a secluded cove.

3. Visit Anna Ruby Falls

Less than an hour’s drive from Brasstown Valley Resort, you’ll find the spectacular Anna Ruby Falls. 

It quickly became one of my favorite waterfalls in the USA for its stunning lush forest setting and its twin falls thundering down.

4. Visit Brasstown Bald

Only 20-minutes from Brasstown is Brasstown Bald, the tallest mountain in Georgia which offers views of Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Up there you can just enjoy the views, or access four hiking trails ranging from 1/2 to 6 miles in length.

5. Visit the Nantahala National Forest

Nantahala National Forest is only a short drive away and is the perfect place to experience the amazing nature of the region.

From whitewater rafting to an exhilarating hike along the Appalachian Trail, there are endless opportunities for exploration.

You can go zip-lining through the scenic forests, mountain biking on the well-maintained trails, and rock climbing along some of the most stunning cliffs in North Carolina.

For those looking for a mild adventure, canoeing or kayaking down its peaceful rivers is a great way to take in all its beauty, or you can visit the nearby Rollins Planetarium.

6. Visit the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds

Georgia Mountains Fairgrounds is a great family attraction nearby, offering carnival rides, live music concerts, and street food stalls.

Get a thrill on the go-karts or bumper boats, enjoy some delicious fair food, or attend one of the many annual festivals such as the Georgia Mountain Fair, the Fall Festival, and Georgia’s Official State Fiddlers’ Convention.

There’s always something happening at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds.

Surrounded by breathtaking views of the mountains and majestic Amicalola Falls, it was a place where you can just disconnect and let nature inspire you.

“This is my kind of getaway,” I exhaled from my Adirondack chair with wine in hand and flames leaping out of the fire pit.

Our cabin was decked on the back with only forested views in front. The Talbott Brothers on Spotify were reminding me to stay Young and the rushing sound of Amicalola Falls as it tumbled down over its lip in the distance relaxed the stress out of me.

We would spend the day exploring the miles of hiking trails or take a scenic drive through the North Georgia Mountains, before coming back to our cozy cabin and relaxing in front of the fire and sharing our fondest memories of the day.

Where is Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia?

Amicalola Falls State Park is located within Chattahoochee National Forest between Ellijay and Dahlonega in Dawsonville, Georgia.

It is just over an hour north of Atlanta, two hours southeast of Chattanooga, TN, and three hours south of Asheville, NC.

The park is less than an hour’s drive from Blue Ridge, Helen, and Hiawassee.

Which lead me to ponder several times during our visit, how can this place be so close to Atlanta, yet so blissfully quiet? 

Part of the blessings of traveling mid-week and during the month of May is a little extra serenity before summer breaks out. 

What Makes Amicalola Falls State Park Special?

The best thing about Amicalola Falls State Park is that it offers the best of both worlds.

You can enjoy many outdoor activities such as swimming, fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, and more.

Or you can simply relax and enjoy nature, spending an evening spent under the starlit night sky on the terrace or cozy up by the lodge’s outdoor fire pits.

As soon as I melted into the natural surroundings by that fire pit, I scrapped all our plans to possibly venture out the next day to visit a few farms and wineries in the surrounding Dawson County region of the North Georgia Mountains.

“You know what, Craig. This is all I need right now. I’m not leaving Amicalola Falls State Park. I’m going to wake up slowly, do a couple of hiking trails to experience the falls, and then I’m going to lap up the serenity of this cabin and the surrounding forest. There’s nothing else that will give me greater bliss.”

And we did just that. Four nights at the state park doing nothing else but enjoying the adventures this stunning Georgia State Park had to offer. 

Things To Do At Amicalola Falls State Park: An Adventure Lodge

If you think sitting in the forest for four days would be a little too heavy on the boredom scale for you, let me tell you that Amicalola is known as an adventure park. 

Experiencing the grandeur of Amicalola Falls is not the only attraction on offer. There are a range of outdoor activities available that move from sedate to thrilling – it is one of Georgia’s most popular state parks for a reason! 

1. See the Beauty of Amicalola Falls

Of course, you would expect Amicalola Falls to be the highlight of your visit to the state park named in its honor. 

Amicalola means “Tumbling Waters” in Cherokee, which is exactly what your senses will experience in this Georgia State Park. At 729 ft high, it is the highest waterfall in Georgia and the third-highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. 

What’s unique about these falls is that you can experience it from multiple angles – from the top, the bottom, the middle, and views from far away. I recommend you do all the above.

When we visited, part of the trail was closed due to storm damage so we had to navigate around a little so we could still experience all the different approaches. 

2. Hike Amicalola Falls Trail (from the bottom to the top)

The ultimate is to hike from the base of the falls of Amicalola Falls (starting from the Visitor Center at the park’s entrance) right to the top where the lodge is located. 

From the Visitor Center, the trail takes you through a lush green forest beside the creek and the Reflection Pool, popular for trout fishing.

Pause here to take in the views of the Falls coming down the mountain, but not for too long as the height may scare you away from finishing your walk!

From there, the path has a short but steep climb to the bottom of the falls where you have views of the falls cascading down the rock face and beautiful views of the valley behind you. 

Then, you climb a flight of steps to the middle observation deck and then another 425 stairs to the top. 

Plan to stop at the lodge for lunch and a drink after to soak up the views before taking the easier walk back down. 

It will be a truly memorable experience!

4. Hike The Top of the Falls to the Middle

Alternatively, you can walk down from the top of the falls for a shorter hike to the middle observation deck.

This will involve those 425 steps down – remembering that you’ll need to come back up. I’m of reasonable fitness and it took me about five minutes and didn’t feel as bad as it looks – you can do it!

5. Walk The Flat Path to the Middle Observation Deck

There is a much easier and flatter trail that takes you to the middle observation deck. You can, of course, take the steps up to the top from here, or down to the bottom (if they are open).

NOTE:

When we visited (May 2021), the section between the middle observation deck and the bottom of the falls was closed in order to repair storm damage.

So, we hiked from the top to the middle, and then from the Visitor Center to the bottom of the falls. That cut out about 300 stairs, but gave us the same views and experience.

6. Go Zip Lining on the Screaming Eagle Aerial Adventure Tour

Time to add Ralph to your USA Bucket List.

Ralph is The Super Zip high above the canopy at Amicalola Falls State Park.

We’re talking a 2,400-ft long, 250 ft high cable zooming you at speeds of up to 50-60 miles per hour and offering you outstanding mountain and valley views. On a clear day, you can even see out to the Atlanta Skyline. 

I loved this zipline and only wished it went for longer.

The Screaming Eagle zip lining experience at Amicalola Falls State Park can last up to four hours over three levels of courses comprising of zip lines and suspension bridges.

Level 3 takes in all 16 zip lines and is where you’ll find Ralph. 

There is a weight restriction of 95lbs. Savannah was so disappointed she was too light for Ralph, but she enjoyed experiencing Stanley, Number 2 on the zip line thrill odometer. 

Kalyra was pretty nervous to do Ralph, and I had to coax her quite a bit as I knew she’d love it and regret it if she walked away.It is a delicate dance with your kids to help them navigate past fear. As predicted, after it she said it was “awesome and not as scary as I thought.”

7. Try 3D Archery

We are going deep into the forest hunting animals on this archery course with a difference. 

You’ll come across foam modeled animals such as deer, bear, foxes and the final prize – an elusive dinosaur. 

The 3D Archery course at Amicalola is loads of fun and feels like the real deal. You’ll learn the basics of using a bow and arrow and will take shots at the foam 3D targets in the outdoor range.

The 3D archery is a fun family activity, which our girls really loved and felt empowered doing. 

8. Have A Go At Tomahawk Throwing

Our family will always remember our first time Tomahawk throwing.

Craig was front of camera and attempting to nail a bullseye after his line, “this is my first time throwing a tomahawk.”

He shocked himself more than the rest of us when he truly did nail the bullseye! It was hilarious (stay tuned for our video).

We enjoyed learning how to throw a tomahawk and attempting to nail the bullseyes ourselves. The girls did great. I think I landed only 1 or 2 but had fun doing so. 

Throwing an axe at the target is harder than it looks.

7. Meet The Birds of Prey

On weekends, you can spend time getting to know a few of the park’s animals at animal meet and greets.

We loved meeting Sir Lands-a-Lot, a rescued red-tailed hawk who did not want to fly away to be wild again. He was raised with ducks and now quacks like one. Hearing that was an Amicalola moment. 

We also got to touch a non-venomous corn snake named Kellogg. The girls were afraid at first, but once they did, it didn’t take long for them to fall in love with it curling around their arms.

Once you hold and touch a snake, you experience how special they are and fear them less. I love how Amicalola gives you this opportunity to experience it firsthand. 

Do not touch wild snakes, btw!

8. Hike Part of the Appalachian Trail

Did you know Amicalola Falls State Park is where scores of people each year begin their once-in-a-lifetime adventure hiking the Appalachian Trail?

The 5-mile hike on the approach trail begins at the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail from the Visitor Center and leads to the base of Springer Mountain, the official beginning of the Appalachian Trail, which then continues for another 2,000+ miles to Maine. 

You can walk a section of it, or just get your photo taken at the stone archway signaling the beginning and tell all your friends you did it.

9. Hike the Mountain Laurel Loop

This moderate hiking trail is a looped trail that sits on the ridge above Amicalola Creek and has amazing views of the old Appalachian approach trail.

The hike is only about 1 km, but you can extend it by hiking onto the Spring Trail or the West Ridge Falls trails.

Park the car at the West Ridge Falls Access Trail and hike from there.

Amicalola Falls Lodge

“You cannot beat a view like this,” I demanded of the girl’s attention as we sat down at the Amicalola Falls State Park Lodge for dinner the first evening.

“Can you pay attention for a minute? Look at it. A seeping vista filled with forested mountains, not a sign of civilization in sight. Do you know how rare this is? Especially in the USA.”

Amicalola Lodge turns an ordinary state park experience into an extraordinary one.

Perched in the middle of the forest on one of the tallest mountains in Georgia is the grand lodge with magnificent vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

You will love coming in and out of the lodge as you move about your day, either organizing activities, eating, sleeping, or just relaxing in its beautiful foyer and outside patio.

Another highlight of your stay at Amicalola State Park is watching the sunset behind the mountains from the lodge. 

You’ll notice a quiet gathering of guests with their glasses of wine and chairs perched on the edge of the mountain and around the fire pit.

Again, with this view you’ll be amazed at the complete absence of any human life – just a few hawks circling around with endless flight space over the valley and mountains. 

Dining: Cascades Restaurant

Inside the lodge, the Cascades Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offers traditional American and Southern classic cuisine.

The pecan crusted trout is a crowd pleaser, as is the rib eye steak. On busy days, they have buffets for all three meals with plenty of choices to suit all tastebuds.

The standout feature is the floor to ceiling glass windows offering panoramic views of the mountains. 

Head to the patio for your pre or post dinner drinks, sunset views, and quiet firepit conversations.

After checking into our mountain cabin, we took one look over the back deck and started carrying wood down to the firepit below. It’s the perfect space to unplug and unwind deep in nature. 

I loved hearing the rushing sound of Amicalola Falls from our campfire in front of the cottages. And the girls and I had loads of fun dancing together on the huge deck of the cabin. Talk about Extraordinary – our moves were just THAT!

The Amicalola Campground is located on the Mountain top near the cabins. It’s secluded, spacious, and quiet with easy access to all amenities. 

There are 24 well maintained wooded campsites for RV’s and tent camping. Sites have water, power, a grill, and a fire ring. 

Note: The road to access the campground is at a 25% grade and may not be suited to the largest RV Camper models.

One of the things we have fallen in love with the most about the Southeast is lake life.

There is a certain kind of serenity that only a lake offers. It provides a stillness my meditating-loving psyche gravitates towards. It feels ancient and grounding and calls me to peace.

So as soon as we drove up to our barrel-shaped cabin in the forest at Unicoi State Park and Lodge in Georgia and saw the lake from our deck, I knew we were in for a peaceful family retreat.

My body moved fast to unload and unpack. Then I declared, “I am going for a walk around the lake. It’s only 2.5 miles and we have enough time before dinner.” 

I could barely wait for Craig to put on his shoes.

Don’t worry if you can’t stay embraced in that quiet, still energy for too long – Unicoi State Park & Lodge has plenty of adventurous activities to balance it out for you.

Where Is The Adventure Lodge, Unicoi State Park?

Only two miles from the Alpine Village of Helen in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains in Tanglewood, Unicoi State Park & Lodge is one of the most popular and loved state parks in Georgia.

This 1,050-acre state park is centered around beautiful Lake Unicoi within the Chattahoochee National Forest.  

The name Unicoi comes from the Cherokee word, “unega,” meaning “white.” As the state park stands on the original Unicoi Trail – a trading path that connected Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia – it’s assumed that Unicoi refers to “place of the white man”, or “the white man’s road”.

It’s where European traders swapped axes, guns and cloth with remote Cherokee villages for furs, deer skins and ginseng.

However, it is said the name could also refer to the white fog of the Blue Ridge Mountains. 

Things to Do At Georgia’s Adventure Lodges Unicoi State Park

This is more than a state park with a few hiking trails and the lodge is known as one of Georgia’s Adventure Lodges for a reason! 

Unicoi offers memorable experiences like paddle boarding, 3-D archery, fly fishing, an adrenaline-pumping zip line course, and a nearby spectacular waterfall. 

1. See the Beautiful Anna Ruby Falls 

It didn’t take long on the short hiking trail to the Anna Ruby Falls for me to mark it as one of my favorite waterfalls in the USA.

The trail through the lush verdant forest past the meandering, full-flowing and cascading Smith Creek was enough for me to know this place was special.

It’s special enough to be protected from within the Chattahoochee National Forest and designated as the Anna Ruby Falls National Recreation Area. It borders the Unicoi State Park, which gives you easy access to visit. In fact, you must go through Unicoi State Park to get to the Visitors Center at the falls.

Anna Ruby Falls is a double waterfall. At 150 feet above, the Curtis Creek and York Creek (which starts high on Tray Mountain on the Appalachian Trail) come thundering down the cliff face and merge together at the bottom to form Smith Creek, (which runs through the park).

It is an impressive sight and a waterfall vista you won’t forget.

If the one mile return trail is not enough for you, you can hike the 5 miles from Anna Ruby Falls back to Unicoi Lodge. 

However you choose to experience it, Anna Ruby Falls is a must when exploring the North Georgia mountains. 

2. Do The Unicoi Zipline & Aerial Adventure Tour 

Time to get out of your comfort zone for an adrenaline rush 100ft in the air zooming across zip lines that range from 75 to 2,000 feet long.   

The Aerial Adventure Tour has three zip line courses, from novice lines to the ultimate adrenaline rush, that take you across up to 19 zip lines and 9 suspension bridges.

Be prepared for the ultimate end on the half-mile, double zip line over the lake and see if you can kick up a splash with your feet. (FYI: You really can’t!) 

Unfortunately, our ziplining adventure was cancelled due to a thunderstorm. We were all devastated, but all great places need an excuse to return! 

3. Kayak or Paddleboard on Unicoi Lake

Not only do I love being in the presence of lakes, but my other favorite thing to do on them is stand up paddle boarding. I haven’t found an outdoor activity that offers me as much Zen as silently paddling across a calm lake.

Paddling on Unicoi Lake was sublime with its pretty reflections, mountain backdrop and water so clear I could see sunken trees and giant fish swimming past.

Craig and the girls paddled beside me in their kayaks. Then we switched all of them out for a leg-pumping workout on the four-person Pontoon Pedal Boats.  

You can rent kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and pedal boats from the Visitor Center.  

4. Go Fly Fishing in the Lake and Streams 

Throw in a line, anglers, the fish are biting!

Unicoi Lake is a great place to catch bass, bluegill and catfish and Smith Creek is the place for trout fishing, as it is stocked on a regular basis.

The section below the lake and dam (Lower Smith Creek) is catch-and-release only from Nov 1 – May 14. Fly fishing classes are offered by the park. 

5. Hit The Hiking Trails at Unicoi State Park 

There are five Unicoi state park trails of various lengths and difficulties.

All will take you through beautiful, forested settings, crossing streams and creeks and passing mountain flowers such as rhododendrons and mountain laurels.

Here are 3 Unicoi hiking trails we recommend: 

Lake Trail 

The Lake Trail was what Craig and I walked when we first arrived. It’s an easy 2.5-mile loop that winds around the edge of the 53-acre Unicoi Lake.

You’ll have beautiful views of the lake and mountains and you even pass by a beached area if you’d like a swimming break.

Smith Creek Trail 

The Smith Creek Trail is 4.8 miles one way and leads from the campground through the Chattahoochee National Forest to the head of the Smith Creek at Anna Ruby Falls.

Unicoi/Helen Trail 

Why not make a fun day of exploring Alpine Helen by walking there?

A 3-mile moderate to strenuous trail will take you to Helen’s Unicoi Hill City Park. It will pass the Mountain Biking Trail and Bottoms Loop Trail along the way – so technically you’ve checked off three Unicoi trails in one! 

Archery & Air Gun Range 

One family activity we loved experiencing on our Georgia state parks road trip was archery; so much that the girls have asked us to find an archery course in Raleigh for them.

Unfortunately, due to the thunderstorm we missed the 3-D Archery Range within Unicoi, but again – we’ll be back! 

The Archery & Air Gun Range is a shooting facility that is set up for static archery target practice, 3-D archery target practice and air gun rifle target practice. 

6. Stay in a Barrel Shaped Cabin 

We’ve stayed in plenty of unique accommodation during our travels, but this was our first time sleeping in a barrel shaped cabin. 

Immersed in the forest on the edge of the lake you’ll find a small village of these cabins built on stilts. The structural design of the Unicoi State Park cabins allows the flora and fauna of the forest to exist with minimal human obstruction. 

Enjoy the rocking chair views of the forest and glimpses of the lake from your deck. The zipline was out the front of ours so we could watch the adrenaline junkies zipping past with wide smiles.

The cabins are spacious with two bedrooms upstairs, while downstairs you have a full kitchen, bathroom, living and dining rooms, and even a fireplace to enjoy.

And yes, the inside is also shaped like a barrel.

Aside from the Barrel Cabins, there are also rustic cabin options on the Smith Creek and larger lake view Deluxe Cabins. 

7. Visit Helen Waterpark

Helen Waterpark is just a few minute’s away from the state park and provides an aquatic oasis with water rides such as the Helens Falls Flume, a 6-story high body slide.

You can ride down one of the many tube slides or try your hand at stand-up paddle boarding in the lazy river.

It’s a great place to go when you need to cool off on hot summer days or have small kids who need more excitement than the playground.

It also has an interactive Splash Pad for toddlers and a massive Olympic-size swimming pool.

Other Accommodations at Unicoi State Park & Lodge 

No matter your style of getaway, the Unicoi State Park has your mountain retreat accommodation covered.

We highly recommend the barrel-shaped cabins for families, but you also have the following options with luxury amenities:  

Unicoi Lodge 

Staying at Unicoi Lodge places you in the hub of all things happening at the park.

It’s where you’ll find the activity center, a small store with locally sourced goods, pool tables, restaurants, and communal fire pits in the grassed courtyard.

The lodge has 100 comfortable, modern guest rooms of various sizes and plenty of those have mountain views. 

Each room comes with a snack bar, TV with cable channels, free self parking, a private bathroom with a shower/tub combinations and hair dryers, and toiletries.

Some rooms come with a lounge area. Guests staying at the lodge can enjoy a weekend buffet breakfast.

The Adventure Camp 

Traveling as a group or with extended family?

The Adventure Camp at Unicoi offers a communal glamping experience, with five sleeping cabins, a communal kitchen, and separate men’s and women’s full bathrooms. You also have access to a picnic area, grills, and a campfire.

The Adventure Camp has an idyll secluded location on Smith Creek where you can fish for trout or cook s’mores over the fire by the creek. 

Campground 

The Unicoi State Park campground is in a beautiful, forested setting right near the Visitor Center and lake. There are 84 campsites including RV full hook ups and walk in primitive tent sites. 

Other Amenities at Unicoi State Park Lodge

As well as having excellent accommodation options and plenty of things to do, you can also take advantage of these other amenities.

• Extra beds for children. You can request infant beds and cribs for ages 0-2, but not extra beds for adults.
• Ticket assistance for nearby attractions.
• 24 hour security and smoke detectors.
• 24 hour reception.
• Shuttle services to Helen on Friday – Sunday.
• Business center and conference center.
• Daily housekeeping.
• It’s also a great destination for weddings and would make for a beautiful wedding venue.

Check-In/Check-Out Instructions

It’s very easy to check in and out of the Lodge, you simply need to show your reservation confirmation and a government-issued photo identification and the credit card or debit card you paid with.

You should make sure to report any special requests or specific accessibility needs to the lodge before arriving.

You may be asked for a cash deposit and incidental charges. There are also extra-person charges and a resort fee. You may also be asked to pay a park fee when using booking platforms.

Note: the time of check-in is after 4pm and check-out is at 11am.

Dining at Unicoi State Park Lodge 

The Unicoi Lodge has a couple of dining options for you during your stay.

The Smith Creek Tavern is a casual restaurant and bar offering southern cuisine. Perfect to catch the game and sample local and regional craft beer, wine and signature cocktails.

My Unicoi burger here was outstanding as were the huge pizzas with creative toppings. 

We loved playing shuffleboard and our girls became quite the pool sharks, running out to play games while we relaxed over drinks and adult conversation.

We love vacations that cater to both adults and kids like this one did.

With a large stone fireplace, tall ceilings and mountain views, the Unicoi Restaurant is the perfect setting for breakfast, lunch or dinner, with classic Southern and American cuisine made from fresh, local ingredients.

Attractions Nearby Unicoi State Park 

Unicoi State Park is near the alpine town of Helen and other popular mountain towns like Dahlonega, Hiawassee, and Sautee Nacoochee. Atlanta is only 1 hour and 40 minutes away. 

The next stop on our Georgia road trip was just under an hour away at Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa. 

Before this we visited the nearby Amicalola Falls State Park & Lodge and Lake Blackshear Resort & Golf Club in South Georgia.

That’s what we discovered at Lake Blackshear Resort & Golf Club in South Georgia. We visited for three nights as part of our Georgia State Parks road trip that also included Amicalola Falls State Park, and Unicoi State Park and Lodge and Brasstown Valley Resort and Spa.

About Lake Blackshear Resort & Golf Club

Lake Blackshear Resort and Golf Club is unique as it is situated in the 1,308-acre Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park.  

Established in 1946 as a memorial to U.S. veterans, it’s one of Georgia’s most visited state parks for the recreation activities people can enjoy such as boating, fishing, swimming, archery, hiking and a round of championship golf.

Where is Lake Blackshear Resort? 

Lake Blackshear Resort is located west of I-75 at the Cordele exit on Highway 280, just a short two-hour drive from Atlanta.  

Walk or bike around 

It’s easy to move to the different experiences and attractions at Lake Blackshear Resort. Slip into that Southern pace by parking your car and either walking or riding bikes for those distances that are a little longer.  

It’s the perfect way to get in your daily exercise as well as enjoy the cypress trees and the lakeside breeze.  

There are miles of trails (including paved trails along the lake) to enjoy within both the resort grounds and the state park.  

The resort has bikes for rent, which can be included in your vacation package. 

Activities at Lake Blackshear Resort and Golf Club 

Whether you want to explore on land or water, Lake Blackshear has a plethora of activities to suit your style and pace. 

The Georgia Veterans Memorial Golf Course 

In keeping with golf’s tradition of being set in stunning locations, the Georgia Veterans Memorial Golf Course sits on the tranquil shores of Lake Blackshear.  

Designed by architect Denis Griffiths, the Lake Blackshear golf course has been listed on Golf Digest magazine’s list of four star-rated courses. 

The 72-par course stretches over 7,000 yards with 4 sets of tees and 130 bunkers. 

I just hope those views don’t distract you from hitting your drive straight. Let’s just say I’m blaming the views for my shot landing in the water. 

Disc Golf 

Swap your golf club for a frisbee and step up to the disc golf plate. Disc golf (or Frisbee golf for us Aussies) is a fun family activity.  

The objective is to throw a Frisbee-style disc into a metal basket called a “hole.” The targets are arranged along a course in the woods – similar to holes in the game of golf. Whoever gets the disc into the basket with the fewest tosses over the course wins.  

Let the winner get ice-cream! Savannah was thrilled with her prize.  

You can pick up your disc golf equipment from the lodge. It’s ideal for families and groups of people and suits all ages.  

Boating 

Be your own captain for the day and cruise around the lake on a pontoon boat rented from the marina.  

Craig enjoyed getting behind the wheel and taking us for a cruise on the lake and enjoying the beautiful scenery of those cypress trees.  

With supervision by Craig, Savannah had a turn of driving as well, which the kids always love! 

Pack a picnic and fishing gear and head out for a few hours. I’d recommend closing the day with a spectacular lake sunset from your pontoon boat.  

Whether you have your own boat, or just want to rent one for a few hours, the Lake Blackshear Marina has what you need.  

Lake Blackshear Marina is a two-minute walk from the lodge. They have pontoons that can accommodate up to 12 people for family fun, fishing, and cruising. Half-day and full-day rentals are the best value. 

Kayaking  

Kayaking amongst the cypress trees at Lake Blackshear was fun. Do your best to dodge the dripping Spanish Moss, or just be like Savannah and paddle right on through it! 

We love kayaking as a family as a way to enjoy the natural beauty of the area we are exploring and create memorable moments.  

Next time we come back, I plan on taking out a kayak or SUP to paddle around at sunset – they are a special event on this South Georgia lake.  

You can rent kayaks from Lake Blackshear Resort & Golf Club if you don’t have your own.  

Fishing 

Lake Blackshear is well stocked with bass, bream, crappie, and catfish. You will find fishing piers around the resort area and the state park.  

There are plenty of secluded coves and hidden fishing spots waiting for you from aboard your boat! 

Beach & Pool Time and Picnics 

I love how much grassy area there is on the edge of the lake in the resort grounds. You can easily find a place for a picnic with shelters and picnic tables under shady trees.  

There is a small swimming beach right near Cypress Grill which is perfect for a refreshing afternoon activity. And Lake Blackshear also has a heated outdoor swimming pool to enjoy if the weather isn’t just right for the lake.  

Military Museum 

For history buffs, Lake Blackshear Resort has a military museum featuring educational exhibits and artifacts such as uniforms, weapons, and medals from the Revolutionary to the Gulf wars.  

Since both girls have been learning about the Revolutionary and Civil wars in school, this was a great experience for them to connect to.  

Remote learning is a NEW thing for so many. Take it from us Old Homeschooling Goats – this is the best way to approach learning.  

Outside you’ll also find various tanks and aircrafts including a B-29A Superfortress, jets, tanks, and a helicopter, and you have the opportunity to experience a rifle shooting demonstration from a fully dressed Patriot.  

3D Archery Course

Kalyra channeled her inner Katniss for the 3D archery course and set the standard by shooting the bear first.  

Her exemplary leadership rubbed off on us as we all fired off a target hit right after her.  

It was our first-time experiencing 3D archery and we all loved it. This is a cool family activity, especially for those with teens.  

The 3D archery course took us along a wooded trail with 15 foam targets in the shape of animals and mythological creatures.  

Air Gun and Archery Range 

Not only can you fire at 3D foam targets, but stationary ones as well at the Static Archery Range and Air Gun Range.  

The air gun range consists of 12 static air rifle targets located 10 yards from the shooting platform. 

The static archery range features 5 static targets ranging from 10 – 40 yards away from the shooting platform. 

Savannah loved the targets that were closer to her and were filled with animals. It makes it fun for the younger kids to shoot at them rather then standard bullseye targets.  

Sam Shortline Excursion Train 

All aboard the Sam Shortline Train! 

At Lake Blackshear, you can enjoy a ride on a 1949 vintage train named for the original spur line that went from Savannah to Americus, GA and then onto Montgomery, Al. 

You can ride in different carriage classes on a journey of various lengths through the rolling farmlands of southern Georgia. 

Stops include: 

• Americus: a Victorian town and home to Habitat for Humanity’s new Global Village 
• Plains: the small Georgia town made famous by President Jimmy Carter where you can visit President Carter’s campaign museum 
• Archery: featuring President Jimmy Carter’s boyhood farm.  

The train stops for approximately five minutes at each depot allowing riders to disembark to visit the destination and continue on a later train. 

They also have special events like a wine and cheese train, a Day out with Thomas, and a Murder Mystery Dinner Train – I want to come back for that one.  

Sunset at Lake Blackshear 

On our first dinner at Lake Blackshear, I put down my fork to race over to the lake’s edge and gaze at the sun creating such a stunning orange sky.  

The next evening’s sunset was even better.  

We’d just finished a finer dining experience at Cordelia’s and walked down to the water’s edge to experience the tranquility and beauty of the pink sky and the kayakers gently paddling to their perfect water vantage points.  

We then closed out the last of the evening light around the firepit with a glass of red wine soaking up the serenity while the girls danced and played on the grass.

Is lake Blackshear Resort pet-friendly? 

Do you travel with pets? 

Our suitcases never have enough room for them, so we were elated to adopt this gorgeous puppy, Cotton, for the afternoon. She joined us on our filming shoot at Lake Blackshear Resort and Golf Club! 

Cotton really was a beautiful puppy and even stole my heart a little! 

The girls are now begging us for a puppy. It’s a no for now, but it’s great to know that pet lovers can find pet-friendly resorts to travel to.  

Lake Blackshear is one of them!  

Accommodations at Lake Blackshear Resort

Guests can stay in an array of accommodation types, which include Lodge guestrooms, a selection of 68 Villa guest rooms, 10 lake view Cabins and a campground.  

High speed Wi-Fi is included and there is plenty of space in the rooms (with a desk) for those who are remote working or learning.  

The Lodge 

The Lodge is at the heart of Lake Blackshear Resort with stylish rooms offering lake views.  

Each of its 14 guest rooms can comfortably accommodate a family with two double beds in each room. 

The Villas 

For more spacious accommodations with lake views a screened in porches stay in the villas.  

Its serene secluded setting makes it perfect for families.  

The Villas are located next to the Lodge and have easy access to all amenities. For extended families, they have interconnecting rooms.  

Camping at Lake Blackshear 

We had a peek at the Lake Blackshear camping ground as we cruised around the lake on our pontoon boat. I could picture us happily enjoying a few days camped here on our RV trip.  

It has a serene setting on the banks of the lake inviting you to unplug and reconnect with nature.  

There are 82 campsites designed to accommodate tents, trailers, or RVs. And it is within easy walking distance to the lodge and resort amenities.  

Dining at Lake Blackshear Resort 

I love how you don’t need to leave the property to experience great food at Lake Blackshear Resort. And why would you when the views are this good and perfectly matched with serenity? 

Whether you dine at Cordelia’s or Cypress Grill you MUST order the asparagus as your side for every meal. It was the BEST asparagus I have ever had. 

Lake Blackshear makes it possible to get excited about asparagus. As Savannah never eats her sides, I was sure to order it for her and give myself a double serving.  

Cordelia’s 

Take full advantage of the lake and garden vistas at Cordelia’s Restaurant, either inside or on the covered verandah.  

Named for the daughter of Samuel Hawkins, the founder of the nearby city of Cordele, Cordelia’s is the perfect place for a casual relaxing country breakfast, a leisurely lunch, or an elegant dinner. 

Keeping with the Georgian flavor, enjoy a serving of Georgia peach and bourbon wings for appetizers.  

This is also your breakfast spot at the lodge, which includes eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, and other delicious treats (think waffles). 

88’s Lakeside Bar

88’s Lakeside Bar is attached to Cordelia’s and is a great spot to wrap up your day with cocktails or fine wine, either inside or on the patio. Either place has exceptional views.  

88’s Lakeside Bar takes its name from the historical timeline of the region. The State of Georgia was established in 1788, and the city of Cordele was founded in 1888. 

Cypress Grill 

The casual Cypress Grill’s location adjacent to the marina makes this a popular watering (and dining) hole for locals, those staying at the resort, and those parking their boats at the marina for a lake cruising stopover.  

Grab a table on the patio, a signature margarita, and a delicious meal that ranges from burgers to sandwiches and seafood.

  You’re in the Peach State, so you have to get the blackened catfish with the whiskey peach & jalapeno preserves. The deliciously fresh summer berry salad is also perfect for those summer lunches.  

The Cypress Grill often has evening entertainment such as live bands and karaoke nights.

Surprisingly, Savannah, Georgia is not a place we have explored extensively with our kids yet. It’s one of our favorite cities in the US and made our cool places to visit in the USA list for 2020.

It is a place we pop into frequently as a stopover on our road trips down to Florida. From Raleigh, it’s a great half way point. It’s a good stopover place because its quite close to the interstate.

Sometimes we consider Charleston, but it’s quite the detour away so it always makes better sense to go to Savannah.

We don’t do much when we’re there except roam around the river walk, explore the beautiful squares, and hopefully have a nice meal somewhere with views.

It was a little harder this time due to Rona, but at least we still had the beautiful outdoors to walk around in.

Those Savannah squares are something beautiful.

As our youngest, was named in part after Savannah, we really need to come back and explore it properly with them from a kid’s perspective.
