Planning to visit Myrtle Beach on a family vacation? Good choice!

We tend to stay away from things like mini golf and general museums and kids play centers, preferring to dive deeper into a region to see what makes it unique and special.

That’s what you’ll find below in our guide on what to do in Myrtle Beach, SC.

We only share what we have experienced ourselves and can recommend.

As we’ve been traveling for over 22 years, 12 years with our kids, we know what makes a great travel experiences, so instead of just listing everything you can do in Myrtle Beach, SC, we’ll share what we personally think makes it special and will help you have a great family vacation.

Let’s get started!

Is Myrtle Beach Worth Visiting?

Considered one of America’s best family vacation spots, Myrtle Beach is a seaside resort town that’s absolutely worth visiting.

It’s quiet and peaceful and still feels like nature, rather than concrete, dominates the landscape.

Hotel views!

In my opinion, October is a great month to visit Myrtle Beach South Carolina, because the summer sun still lingers but without the stifling humidity we are used to at home in Raleigh, North Carolina that sends you scurrying for the AC.

The pool in the resort is not overrun by school kids enjoying their vacation and the girls almost have the lazy river all to themselves.

And the ocean dumps small waves to shore, the rhythmic sounds wash away the stress I carried here alongside my suitcase.

That’s the beauty of a beach vacation at any time of the year.

I think it’s almost as if your psyche knows the power the ocean has to heal so it tightens your tension so that by the time you reach the healing ocean, the waves can strip all of it from you at once.

We visited the destination on a campaign with the Visit Myrtle Beach tourism board.

Fun Things to Do in Myrtle Beach with Kids

If you’re wondering what is there to do in Myrtle Beach, besides just the beach? Then below you will discover some of those regions and all the fun things to do in Myrtle Beach with kids.

1. Spend the Day at the Beach

Myrtle Beach, SC

You cannot visit Myrtle Beach and not experience the gorgeous 60 miles of coastline. It’s one of the best beach vacation spots in the United States.

It’s known as the Grand Strand and is home to 14 distinct communities that offer something special to the region.

From the the surfing breaks on North Myrtle Beach to the pristine natural beauty of Huntington Beach and Myrtle Beach State Parks and the family-friendly Cherry Grove Beach, you can find the perfect beach experience for you.

Some of the best beaches in Myrtle Beach area also include:

 • Surfside Beach
 • Garden City Beach
 • Murrells Inlet
 • Litchfield Beach

When it comes to free things to do in Myrtle Beach with kids, you can’t beat time playing in the sand by the ocean!

2. Stroll the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade

kalyra and savannah walking on myrtle beach boardwalk
Myrtle Beach boardwalk

Along the main shoreline is a 1.2 mile stretch of Myrtle Beach boardwalk and promenade.

There are two main sections: one is a more serene, natural environment, and the other is focused on fun with beachfront shops, restaurants and the iconic 200-foot SkyWheel.

For nostalgic fun pop into the Fun Plaza Arcade, or grab a hot dog and a milkshake from Peaches Corner, a staple since the 1930’s. There are plenty of kid friendly things to do in Myrtle Beach in this boardwalk region.

3. Ride the SkyWheel for Myrtle Beach Views

SkyWheel on myrtle beach
Myrtle Beach SkyWheel

The SkyWheel is a gigantic observation wheel that stands out in the cityscape.

There are 42 glass-enclosed gondolas that can seat up to six people. If you’re afraid of heights, you may find it to be a thrilling ride. I found it quite serene.

The ride goes for about 10 minutes and you get beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and up and down Myrtle Beach.

Get there early so you can almost have the entire wheel to yourself and enjoy one of the relaxing Myrtle Beach attractions for families!

4. Watch a Spectacular Sunrise at Myrtle Beach State Park

Sunrise over jetty at Myrtle Beach State park,

A mile of natural beachfront, a fishing pier and a magnificent rising sun. What more do need to start your day in the most joyful way?

Head down to Myrtle Beach State Park, to watch a magnificent Myrtle Beach sunrise.

You’ll appreciate this one-mile slice of preserved natural beauty nestled between the high rises. Enjoy a walk along the beach or the winding boardwalk protecting the dunes and nesting sea turtles.

You can even walk along the pier and enjoy seeing what the fishermen pull in.

5. Join a Ranger Program at Myrtle Beach State Park

kids holding crabs and jellyfish
Myrtle Beach kids activities They’ll love this!

“I thought that was going to be so boring, but it was so much fun. I can’t believe we got to hold a jellyfish, and we caught 13 hermit crabs and two blue swimmers!”

Our kids were excited to share all they had learned from our morning with Ranger Ann on the fishing pier in the Myrtle Beach State Park.

After learning about (and holding) blue swimmers and hermit crabs and jellyfish we walked along the boardwalk to find monarch butterflies to tag, but the windy conditions were keeping them away.

Ranger Ann was very enthusiastic about the region and sharing her passion for the local wildlife and fauna with us.

I loved how she subtly weaved in messages of conservation and how small acts by individuals can make positive changes.

Myrtle Beach State Park is 312 acres on the city’s south end in a gorgeous oceanfront maritime forest that reminded me of the natural bush you’d find on many of our beaches back home in Australia.

It receives an estimated 1 million visitors a year, few of which were present when we visited.

I’m so glad they thought to preserve this place in 1936 when it became South Carolina’s first state park.

Joining one of the ranger programs is definitely one of the most educational and fun things to do in Myrtle Beach with kids. Children of all ages will enjoy it.

There is a campground in the State Park and other cool programs like sunrise and sunset beach yoga.

This was my favorite area in the region and perfect for Myrtle Beach kids activities. They will love it!

6. Go Kayaking through a Salt Marsh in Huntington Beach State Park

people Kayaking through the Salt Marsh in Huntington Beach State Park
Cool Myrtle Beach attractions for kids – kayaking in the salt marsh

This has to be one of the most fun things to do in South Carolina for those that love the outdoors!

We started our guided kayak tour through the salt marsh with our guide Paul telling us that Huntington Beach State park has some of the best bird watching on the East Coast.

As an Aussie we know what it’s like to be surrounded by an abundance of birds, each with their own personality and quirks.

The marshlands were thriving with birds such as egrets, herons, cormorants, eagles, vultures and osprey.

We even saw a kingfisher standing on the tip of the grass. It looked so much like its relative, our very own kookaburra. Unlike the kookaburra, this kingfisher is a fish eating bird and doesn’t have the laugh of the kookaburra, more like an evil cackle.

For two hours we paddled under the warm sun through the marshlands learning more about the history of the area and the ecology of the marshlands.

Myrtle Beach attractions for everyone

It didn’t end up being an alligator adventure for us, as they were starting to move to warmer waters.

During the warmer months, you have a good chance of seeing them out in the marshlands doing a little lunch hunting. Don’t worry, they are not interested in you!

Put this on your list of family things to do in Myrtle Beach, beyond the beach!

7. See Live Oak Trees at Brookgreen Gardens

Brookgreen Gardens – family things to do in Myrtle Beach, SC

If you’re looking for places to visit in Myrtle Beach that provide your own space and tranquility, then head to Brookgreen Gardens.

This is a national historic landmark that hosts the largest collection of outdoor American sculptures in the world.

You may think that sounds like a lot of art to look at it – it truly is. The collection contains over 2,000 works by 425 artists over the 9,127-acre property.

There is also a small zoo, an Enchanted storybook Forest, a butterfly house and boat rides and trekker excursions taking you deeper into the property.

Kids will love the serenity at Brookgreen Gardens

Don’t miss Live Oak Allée, which is comprised of 250-year-old Live Oak trees with weeping Spanish moss that were planted in the early 1700s when Brookgreen Gardens was four thriving rice plantations.

There is a great activity booklet for the kids to keep them engaged with various scavenger hunt type questions.

So if you’re looking for more things to do near Myrtle Beach, consider these beautiful gardens.

8. Explore Murrells Inlet

restaurants on the water at Murrels Inlet,
Murrels Inlet – one of our favorite places in Myrtle Beach SC

The small fishing village of Murrells Inlet was once the lair of the infamous pirate Blackbeard.

It’s located right near Huntington Beach State Park and Brookgreen Gardens so it abounds in natural beauty waiting for you to explore.

I loved its Southern coastal vibe on the intracoastal waterway. I wish we had more time to explore it. It offers more sedate Myrtle Beach family fun than the boardwalk area and is our personal preference.

There are plenty of water sports to do in the area including parasailing, jet skiing, and fishing charters.

I love the look of this guided stand up paddle board trip around the beautiful waters of Murrells Inlet.

There is a half-mile-long Marsh Walk, which has gorgeous views of the marshlands and the fishing boats coming in with the day’s catch pulled from the surrounding waters and sent straight to the restaurants.

Along the boardwalk are a string of restaurants with outdoor seating areas, views and live music. (see where we ate down below)

It’s the place to be after dark for seafood, drinks, and relaxed southern fun.

Murrells Inlet reminded us of Calabash in nearby Brunswick Islands, North Carolina

9. Shop, Eat, Play at Broadway at the Beach

Broadway at the Beach is home to top attractions at Myrtle Beach and is the place for shopping, restaurants, nightlife and family entertainment, all of which border a 23-acre lake.

Here you’ll find plenty of things for kids to do in Myrtle Beach like Ripley’s Aquarium, WonderWorks, Margaritaville, and Hard Rock Café.

A must in Myrtle Beach attractions for kids, beyond the beach!

10. Unleash Your Inner Scientist at WonderWorks

When I first saw the upside-down building, I thought what Las Vegas style rubbish is this? Who would want to go into something so kitschy and gaudy?

upside down exterior of wonderworks
Fun things to do in Myrtle Beach, SC

Never let ignorance get in the way of a good experience.

I had no idea what that upside-down building was – I thought it was just that, an upside-down building with probably arcade games in it or something.

But alas no, inside it are three levels of imagination, experiments, and adventures.

We’ve visited a few interactive science museums before, but WonderWorks has to be one of my favorites.

There is nothing boring or kitsch in here, and each station and activity teaches you something interesting about life.

Not sure what to do in Myrtle Beach in bad weather? It’s one of the Myrtle Beach attractions perfect for those rainy days that take you away from Myrtle waves!

We learned why those bed of nails we were lying on were not piercing our skin, how high we could jump, how good we were at shooting basketball hoops, and who was our celebrity doppelganger (Jane Fonda for me!).

savannah lying on bed of nails
Fun Myrtle Beach attraction for kids.

We got to feel what a hurricane could potentially feel like, just how cold the water was when the Titanic sunk, and how to push the limits of electrical understanding.

Thank you, WonderWorks, for taking care of much of my homeschooling curriculum for the month – I was very excited to see Kalyra do very well in the weather and natural disaster quizzes!

Our two favorite activities were of course the high ropes course. I’m getting braver with each one we try, and the girls practically run across them now without holding on to anything!

And then there was laser tag. It’s always a fun game to play as a family. I was stunned to walk out as the winner with a score three times as high as the others.

I guess I liked the rapid-fire function!!

WonderWorks is definitely one of the best things to do in Myrtle Beach with kids.

11. Find Your Treasure at the Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show

pirate standing on wooden boat
We loved the Pirates Voyage Dinner in Myrtle Beach

Kalyra and Savannah are tumbling addicts. They attend tumbling classes when we’re in Raleigh and are forever practicing their back handsprings and front tucks.

I am forever trying to remember which one is which!

As soon as the Pirates Voyage show started and the pirates in front of us began tumbling, back tucking, back handsprings and more amazing acrobatic tricks, I knew we had arrived at the right show.

The girls were mesmerized the entire time.

Savannah would not let me touch her head after the performance, in case I erased her memory and interrupted her dreaming of life as a back-handspringing pirate in a dinner show.

Needless to say we loved the Pirates Voyage Show, it’s one of those Myrtle Beach family activities to amaze the kids and offers a completely unique dining experience.

It’s 90 minutes of acrobats, juggling, special effects, singing and cool lighting as they searched for lost treasure. All of this happens while you eat a four-course meal.

Loads of great evening entertainment for families in Myrtle Beach

Craig and I even volunteered to participate in the water bucket relay race. Unfortunately we did not win, but had fun splashing more water on ourselves than in the buckets.

It’s the pirate life for me!

Put this on your list as one of the fun things to do in Myrtle Beach at night.

12. Sing and Dance at The Carolina Opry

Fun things to do in Myrtle Beach at night for families

If you like singing, dancing and comedy, then consider a night at The Carolina Opry.

We love taking the girls to the theater and the Opry in Nashville so we knew we’d enjoy this evening. I love how the music spanned multiple genres and ages like soul, country, and pop and rock.

My favorite was the Elvis section and This is Me from The Greatest Showman! It was quite the performance with all the cast involved in the singing and dancing.

Savannah was mesmerized by the guitar playing throughout the show. She has her own guitar now so I loved how this show motivated her to keep practicing.

The Carolina Opry is a kid-friendly Myrtle Beach attraction.

Get your Carolina Opry Tickets here – they also have a popular Christmas themed show. See more here.

You may also be interested in the Legends in Concert show.

13. Splash Around at Myrtle Waves Water Park

Myrtle Waves Water Park in Myrtle Beach is South Carolina’s largest water park and the perfect destination for families looking to beat the heat and have a splash of fun.

With over 30 water slides, attractions, and 1.2 million gallons of water, it’s a must-visit attraction for families and thrill-seekers alike.

The park has something for everyone, from the thrilling Riptide Rockets and Thunderbolt Speed Slides to the more relaxing Lazy River and Ocean in Motion Wave Pool.

There are also food stalls and vendors throughout the park where visitors can grab a quick bite or refreshing drink.

14. Ride the Roller Coasters at Family Kingdom Amusement Park

Family Kingdom Amusement Park has over 37 thrilling rides and a wide range of attractions, from classic rides like bumper cars and a Ferris wheel to more intense thrill rides such as roller coasters.

There are also plenty of rides designed specifically for younger children, making it an ideal destination for families with kids of all ages.

15. Set Sail on Blackbeard’s Pirate Cruise

For more unique things to do in Myrtle Beach with kids, consider a ride on Blackbeard’s Pirate Cruise.

This thrilling and interactive adventure allows the whole family a chance to step back in time and experience the excitement of the high seas.

The cruise takes place on a replica pirate ship, complete with a crew of swashbuckling pirates and plenty of pirate-themed activities.

During the cruise, passengers can participate in a variety of games and activities, such as water gun battles and treasure hunts.

There are also pirate-themed shows and performances, complete with music, dancing, and plenty of laughs.

And if you want to continue the theme of pirates, head over to Captain Hook’s Adventure Golf afterwards and check out the mini golf course.

16. Enjoy A Medieval Times Dinner

Man on horseback at a medieval show

If you need fun things to do in Myrtle Beach with kids at night, then take them to enjoy a Medieval Times Dinner.

This is an immersive and unforgettable evening where the whole family can witness the grandeur of a medieval banquet.

The dinner takes place in a castle-like setting and features a four-course meal served by costumed servers.

The highlight of the dinner is the tournament, which features knights in shining armor competing in jousting matches, sword fights, and other medieval games of skill.

It’s an exciting and entertaining spectacle that will keep visitors on the edge of their seats.

17. Hit the Go-Kart Tracks at Broadway Grand Prix

Broadway Grand Prix has some thrilling go-kart tracks, mini-golf courses, and arcade games, making it a place that the whole family can find enjoyment at.

The highlight of the park is its seven go-kart tracks, featuring twists, turns, and high-speed thrills that are sure to get your heart racing. Other attractions include an 18-hole mini-golf course, bumper boats, a climbing wall, and an arcade with a variety of games.

A visit to Broadway Grand Prix is a chance to let loose, have fun, and create unforgettable memories with loved ones.

Places to Eat in Myrtle Beach with Kids

When traveling with kids, it can always be a struggle finding places to eat! Here are some places we loved when we visited!

Indulge in Local Seafood at Wicked Tuna, Murrells Inlet

Wicked Tuna restaurant on marina
Wicked Tuna – family friendly Myrtle Beach restaurant

We had a delicious seafood dinner at the slightly upmarket Wicked Tuna which is in the MarshWalk.

As Murrells Inlet is known as the seafood capital of South Carolina, it was the perfect dinner choice.

The seafood at this restaurant is straight from hook to table. They have seven boats that go out each day to bring back the best of the local catch.

Craig, Kalyra and I couldn’t get enough of the mussels in a bacon tomato broth, and our grilled seafood platter was delicious, especially the tender sea scallops and local sweet and flakey, triggerfish.

Eat Award Winning Red Velvet Waffles from Johnny D’s Waffles and Bakery

Are you ready for some of the best waffles in America?

According to the Food Network, the red velvet waffles at Johnny D’s rank amongst the nation’s best and perfect for your Myrtle Beach family activities.

Chef and owner Jamie Saunders’, creates innovative dishes like these and her chipotle bacon eggs benedict.

She is also an active supporter of the Champion Autism Network and trains her staff to accommodate families’ needs for those with children on the autism spectrum.

Good news for gluten free pancake lovers – if you’re looking for places to go in Myrtle Beach there are gluten free strawberry and banana hot cakes.

Get Your Cheap and Tasty Burgers at River City Cafe

River City Cafe, Myrtle Beach
Quick and easy meals for kids in Myrtle Beach

The River City Cafe is a chain of cafes in Myrtle Beach, and each one is a relaxed place to eat a wide variety of burgers.

I like the colorful outdoor seating area of the location we visited on 21st Avenue North. There are a few throughout the Myrtle Beach area.

Eating here is quick, easy and affordable.

Croissants Bakery and Bistro

Keeping the kids happy with pancakes and croissants

For a French-inspired breakfast head to Croissants Bakery and Bistro.

Some of their signature breakfast menu items include pancakes, eggs benedict or bananas foster french toast.

Chef and owner Heidi Vukov is committed to preparing and serving fresh local vegetables, fruits, seafood and meats. We appreciated the friendly service here as well.

Be sure to take some macaroons home with you when you go. They are truly delicious!

Where to Stay in Myrtle Beach

Island Vista Resort – awesome family accommodation in Myrtle Beach

We loved our Island Vista Resort on North Myrtle Beach home for our three-night stay.

It’s a few miles north of main Myrtle Beach, and the only hotel for nearly a mile in either direction making it feel like a secluded slice of paradise.

It’s on the beachfront and has an indoor and outdoor pool (heated in the cooler months) and spas, including a lazy river, waterfall and kids splash area.

And the sunrise view from our balcony was amazing!

We loved the apartment style suites. We had plenty of room and our own space.

There were two bedrooms, a living room, large kitchen, and a balcony with ocean views.

The Cypress Room has an affordable ala carte breakfast menu and happy hour drinks every afternoon from 4- 6pm and bar snack food (great wings!)

There is also a pool bar for drinks and snacks.

There are plenty of things to do in the North Myrtle Beach area, including the Go Ape Zip line and adventure course, but we chose to relax at the resort and enjoy the beach.

Final Thoughts on Things to Do in Myrtle Beach With Kids

It doesn’t take long until you feel all the stresses of daily life leave you when you visit Myrtle Beach.

You’re left with just peace and easy breathing and a connection to nature and the present moment.

That deepens for the rest of our trip as we return to nature, kayaking, walking and climbing trees.

While I could have stayed on that pool chair for our entire three days in Myrtle Beach, SC, I think you and I both know that’s a family vacation that would end up feeling a little bland and monotonous.

A beach vacation needs a healthy balance of relaxation and adventure for it to be truly memorable.

And that’s what Myrtle Beach gave us.

Looking for tips on what to do in Charleston, South Carolina? Then you’ve come to the right place.

Charleston is famous for its historic sites, 18th century architecture, incredible beaches and nature sites, and warm Southern charm.

Whether you’re a history buff or a nature lover, you’ll find there are many things to do in Charleston SC.

In this guide, we shared some of our top tips and recommendations for tourist attractions in Charleston, as well as suggestions for places to eat, drink, stay, and explore.

Is Charleston, South Carolina Worth Visiting?

portico columns on historic charlreson building
Charleston, SC

Charleston, South Carolina is easily one of the most charming cities in the country, if not the world.

The historic buildings that hosted founding fathers now house award winning restaurants and stores. What’s old becomes new again.

It’s also the ideal combination of beach, city and country, with all three within fifteen minutes of each other, making it one of the best weekend getaways in the USA.

For those reasons and more, it’s absolutely worth visiting. It is included in our best USA road trips list!

Things to Do in Charleston, SC

Below are some of our favorite attractions in Charleston and places to see. Make sure you add a few of these stops to your Charleston itinerary.

1. Explore Sullivan’s Island

canons at Fort Moultrie
Fort Moultrie on Sullivan Island

There are dozens of barrier islands and beaches surrounding Charleston, but Sullivan’s Island just happens to be my favorite. It is more family-oriented and has the small town atmosphere.

It has a unique blend of history and natural beauty. One of the main reasons to visit here is for the pristine beaches which are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing on, as well as opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing in the surrounding waters.

However don’t miss a visit to Fort Moultrie, a national historic landmark that played a significant role in American military history.

2. Take the Kids to Splash in the Joe Riley Waterfront Park Fountains

pineapple fountain at waterfront park charleston

The Joe Wiley Waterfront Park is a large urban park with places to walk, jog, play and lounge around.

If you’re visiting on a hot summer’s day, there are two fountains that can keep children entertained and cool during the sweltering summer months.

It’s location next to Charleston harbor offers incredible views from the pier overlooking the water.

3. Check out the Stunning Architecture of Rainbow Row

Rainbow Row colorful and well-preserved historic Georgian row houses in Charleston, South Carolina, USA

Rainbow Row and the Battery are famous for a reason. Rainbow Row is the ideal photospot for a postcard, with houses painted in pastel colors.

This beautiful and historic street dates back to the 18th century and is a prime example of Georgian and Federal architecture.

Stroll along the cobblestone streets and marvel at the vibrant colors of the homes, which have been perfectly preserved.

You can also step into several art galleries, cafes, and boutique shops, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely afternoon walk or a day of shopping.

4. Pay a Visit to the Battery

Battery Park in the historic waterfront area of Charleston
Battery Park in the historic waterfront area of Charleston, South Carolina, USA

The nearby Battery, or White Point Garden, has some of the city’s most expensive homes overlooking where the Ashley and Cooper Rivers meet.

The Battery offers stunning views of the harbor and Fort Sumter.

The Battery is not only known for its houses, but also the fortified seawall that was constructed in the late 18th century to protect the city against naval attacks.

Take a leisurely stroll along the promenade, which is lined with palmetto trees and historic mansions, or relax on one of the many park benches and take in the picturesque views.

Some nearby monuments worth checking out for their architecture are the Confederate Defenders of Charleston monument and the Fort Sumter monument.

5. Visit the Charleston Tea Plantations

pagoda at Magnolia Plantation

Charleston is home to several historic plantations, such as Boone Hall Plantation and Magnolia Plantation, feature stunning gardens, historic homes, and educational exhibits that showcase the area’s rich history and culture.

Charleston Tea Garden (Formerly Charleston Tea Plantation) is the nation’s only functioning tea plantation on Wadmalaw Island and is a beautiful day trip activity. They host a music festival every summer

If you only visit one plantation, Middleton Place is my pick because of the gardens and grounds. The house is not too shabby either.

You can also take guided tours of the plantation homes and learn about the lives of the enslaved people who worked on these estates.

Get tours and entrance tickets to the plantations in advance:

6. Step Back In Time At The Charleston Museum

If you’re looking for things to do in Charleston on a rainy day in town, the Charleston Museum is a great place to go.

The museum was founded in 1773, making it the oldest museum in the United States.

The museum features an extensive collection of artifacts and exhibits that offer visitors a glimpse into the city’s rich history and culture, plus some artifacts from prehistory.

7. Visit Magnolia Cemetery

Instead of wasting time on the long ferry to Fort Sumter or staring into a pool of water housing the Hunley, go to Magnolia Cemetery.

This is the resting place of hundreds of American Civil War soldiers, old Charleston families and all three crews of the Hunley.

Founded in 1849, the cemetery features stunning monuments, intricately designed tombstones, and ancient oak trees that provide a peaceful and serene atmosphere.

As you walk through the cemetery, you can see the final resting place of many notable figures from Charleston’s past, including politicians, military leaders, and artists.

8. Wander Around Charleston

row of homes on street in Historical downtown area of Charleston,

If you really want to get to know the city, skip the horse-drawn carriage tours because the treatment is questionable.

You might also want to skip the ferry to Fort Sumter National Monument because it’s not much to see unless you’re a civil war buff.

Instead, spend time aimlessly walking around the city. This is the best way to see the authentic culture and way of life here.

Across Marion Square from Lower King lies the Upper King Design District, which has a lot of up-and-coming restaurants, vintage boutiques and bookstores.

The Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood used to be mostly low income housing, but now it’s a mix of college students, coffee shops and restaurants.

Some people might be concerned when they hear North Charleston, but Park Circle is a part of the former Naval base. It still has that 1950s vibe and has some great restaurants.

Shem Creek is Mount Pleasant’s seafood mecca, with dozens of seafood joints and boat charter companies lining the inlet.

Old Town reminds us of the time before Charleston became what it is today with an old-fashioned pharmacy and store. It was also the backdrop for scenes in The Notebook.

John’s Island is not a neighborhood as such, but an island off the coast of Charleston. It’s still very rural, but it’s worth the drive just for Angel Oak, the largest living thing east of the Mississippi.

You might also want to experience the barrier islands like Edisto, Kiawah, Johns, and Wadmalaw, which offer unreal natural beauty.

Avondale in West Ashley has a nice dining and shopping area frequented by young professionals.

9. Go For A Night on the Town in Charleston

broad street Charleston wtih night lights and full moon
Broad Street lit up at night

Charleston has a lively night life scene and is an excellent city for young (and old) travelers who love to party and enjoy a night on the town. It’s also well known for it’s speakeasy bars, which are hidden behind doors and phone booths.

Upper King is where most of the college bars are located, but that just means that they’re not overpriced.

They are all within walking distance of each other so you can wear the cute shoes instead of the comfortable ones.

Market Street has the most bars but can get crowded and charge covers during high season. Check out Mad River, housed inside a former church, and Market Street Saloon, where ladies dance on the bar Coyote Ugly-style.

Bars in Charleston

Rooftop is on the roof of the Vendue Inn and has beautiful views of downtown Charleston. The cocktail list has Southern-influenced martinis, like the Charleston Sweetini.

The Griffon is an English-style pub where it’s tradition to write your name on a dollar bill and staple it to the wall. They also serve excellent traditional English fish ‘n’ chips.

The Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka distillery is now open for tours, which means you can see where the vodka is produced and even sip on some.

Gene’s Haufbrau is a bar for beer lovers, complete with over 150 beers and as much bar food.

My favorite neighborhood bar was always AC’s Bar and Grill because they have a Beer of the Month special. Their Sunday brunch is ideal for soaking up last night’s booze.

10. Check Out the Markets & Shops in Charleston

Historic Charleston City Market in Charleston lit up at night

The epicenter of downtown Charleston is King Street, home to all the best bars, restaurants and stores. It’s also the best place for people watching. Once a month, the city shuts down part of it for pedestrians to walk freely.

King Street is a shopping haven in its own right, from Morris Street on Upper King all the way down to the end.

You’ll find a range of stores, including vintage clothing, records, books, antiques, high-end boutiques and chains.

The Historic Charleston City Market has been completely refurbished and now has permanent booths as well as temporary booths, selling the famous sweetgrass baskets and other local wares. The Tanger Outlets in North Charleston offer deals on Fossil, Coach, BCBG and other high-end brands.

11. Attend One of The Top Charleston Festivals

The Charleston Wine + Food Festival brings together local and international chefs for a week of fine dining.

11. Try Some Good Ol’ Southern Cuisine

Restaurant in a suburban neighborhood

Charleston is a foodie’s city and the question most people ask when you’re hosting out-of-towners is “where are you taking them to eat?”

While there are plenty of big name award-winning restaurants, there are plenty of budget options to satiate your palate.

where to eat in Charleston South Carolina
Budget places to eat in Charleston

Budget places to eat in Charleston are…

 • Charleston Farmers Market is the hub of all Saturday morning activity, where local farmers and artisans bring their produce and crafts, respectively, to sell to the public. There are also food stalls with every type of cuisine. The longest lines are often at Charleston Crepe Company and Roti Rolls.
 • Bowen’s Island Restaurant is a landmark in its own right and has served generations of patrons, even after a devastating fire in 2006 destroyed years of beloved graffiti on its walls. They’ve since rebuilt and serve up the freshest seafood in town, which goes straight from the ocean into the fryer and onto your plate.
 • Poe’s Tavern on Sullivan’s Island pays homage to the island’s former resident, Edgar Allan Poe, who spent time as a soldier there. The front porch is very inviting on a summer day with a pint of beer in hand and a burger in front of you.
 • Jack’s Cosmic Dogs is like dining in the 1950s. Way out in Mount Pleasant is this roadside stop, known for “cosmic” dogs with special sweet potato mustard and hand cut fries.

For more upmarket places to eat in Charleston, check out the following places:

 • Husk is a restaurant owned by McCrady’s Sean Brock, who has been nominated for countless James Beard awards. Either restaurant is a sure thing for terrific food and ambiance.
 • FIG, short for Food is Good, is another award winner led by chef Mike Lata. Located on Meeting Street, it’s the ideal place to impress out of towners.
 • Halls Chophouse is known for the best cuts of steak with sides to share, best for special occasions or just a cocktail after dinner.
 • Fleet Landing is on the cheaper end of the upmarket scale and is the only waterfront restaurant downtown. The refurbished Navy dock has delicious seafood and great views at sunset.

12. Relax on Folly Island’s Beaches

Folly Island is a charming barrier island just outside of Charleston known for its laid-back atmosphere and stunning natural beauty.

The island features miles of pristine beaches, specifically Folly Beach, which is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing.

You can also walk around the island and explore the charming restaurants, cafes, and shops, or take a stroll along the iconic pier.

Kiawah Island is another barrier island that has miles of pristine beaches, world-class golf courses, and abundant opportunities for outdoor adventures.

You can take a leisurely bike ride along the island’s many nature trails, go kayaking or paddleboarding, or simply relax on the beach and soak up the sun.

14. Spend A Day At The South Carolina Aquarium

The South Carolina Aquarium is the perfect thing to do in Charleston on a rainy day.

The aquarium features several exhibits that showcase the diverse and amazing creatures that call the waters of the Lowcountry home, including sea turtles, sharks, and stingrays.

Visitors can also learn about the aquarium’s conservation efforts and participate in educational programs, and even pay a visit to the touch tank which allows you to get up close to some of the marine life.

15. Check Out Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum

Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum shp lit up at night

Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum is a great place to visit for anyone interested in military history and naval technology.

The museum features several exhibits that showcase the region’s military heritage, including the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier, a World War II-era aircraft carrier that is now a floating museum.

Explore the ship’s many decks and compartments, learn about the lives of the sailors who served aboard her, and even climb into the cockpit of fighter jet.

16. Visit the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon

The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon allows visitors to glimpse into the city’s colonial and Revolutionary War-era history.

The building itself served as a hub for political and social activity during the 18th century and was even used as a prison during the American Revolution.

You can take a guided tour of the building and explore the Provost Dungeon, where prisoners of war were held during the conflict.

The museum also features several exhibits that showcase Charleston’s role in the American Revolution and the city’s rich cultural heritage.

17. Admire the Views from Ravenel Bridge

ravenal bridge over the water at sunset

The Ravenel Bridge is a marvel of engineering that offers breathtaking views of the city and its surrounding waterways.

The cable-stayed bridge spans over two miles across the Cooper River, connecting downtown Charleston with Mount Pleasant.

You can take a leisurely stroll or bike ride along the bridge’s pedestrian path, which offers panoramic views of the city skyline and the harbor.

The bridge is also illuminated at night, creating a stunning visual display that is not to be missed.

Where to Stay in Charleston, South Carolina

If you’re not sure where to stay in Charleston, here are a couple of suggest hotels and vacation rentals.

If you’re visiting on a budget, you may want to check out…

 • Charleston Not So Hostel is the only hostel in Charleston and even in the state of South Carolina. The Spring Street location offers both dorm and private rooms and they’ve recently opened a second location on Cannon Street that has more private rooms.
 • Embassy Suites is located in Marion Square’s former Citadel building and they have the best hotel breakfast in town.
 • The Charleston Marriott on Lockwood Boulevard has views of the Marina, is a short walk from the Charleston Riverdogs baseball stadium. The Aqua Terrace rooftop bar is perfect for a sunset drink.

If you have a little more in your budget, these are some excellent upmarket places to stay in Charleston…

 • Arguably the most luxurious hotel in town, Charleston Place has world famous restaurants, shopping and a spa.
 • The Francis Marion Hotel is the only tall building in sight, having been built in 1924 before the rule was established that you can’t build higher than the church steeples.
 • Who wouldn’t want to sleep in the same hotel that Robert E. Lee and Theodore Roosevelt stayed in? The Mills House Hotel is a Charleston landmark.

Best Time of Year to Visit Charleston

Spring is the best time of year to visit Charleston as it can be sweltering in the summer. Autumn brings with it the lush autumn foliage, and winters are also mild.

Getting To and From Charleston

aerial view of charleston at sunset

Charleston International Airport is the hub for regional flights from Charlotte and Atlanta but offers some direct flights.

Delta and Southwest are the main airlines that service the airport, but American, United and US Airways also fly there.

Amtrak and Greyhound both make stops in North Charleston. If you are driving, you will come into town from highway I-26 or I-95. US-17 also runs along the coast. Check here for rental car prices and availability.

When it comes to getting around Charleston, your best form of transport is your own two feet.

Charleston is a city made for walking, with nearly everything you need within a 15-minute stroll.

CARTA buses offer a free route from King Street to the Aquarium, but the other buses can be difficult for visitors to navigate.

Your best bet to get around town is the pedicabs run by college students or by car. Just remember, there are lots of one way streets!

Final Thoughts on Things to Do in Charleston

I love Charleston because it’s the perfect combination of new and old and it’s constantly evolving.

It’s a place where college students go to the beach between classes and where it’s not unusual to see men rocking seersucker pants.

Manners are still important but the city has as much culture and nightlife as you could find anywhere in the lowcountry.

I hope this guide helped you plan some things to do in Charleston and gave you some inspiration for your next trip.

But first…

How Long Do You Need to Road Trip From Dallas to Boston?

caz and her mom standing on bridge over Brazos River Waco Texas
My Mum and I in Waco, Texas

The amount of time you should spend on a Dallas to Boston road trip depends on your travel style and preferences.

The journey can be completed in about 26 hours of non-stop driving (1,761 km), but it’s recommended to take at least two weeks to enjoy the sights and attractions along the way.

When we did our Dallas to Boston road trip, we went with my parents who wanted to come visit us from Australia after we moved to Raleigh, North Carolina.

They had four weeks set aside, so we decided to put a cool road trip experience together for them, incorporating places I knew they’d love and crafting it around their flight into Dallas.

They were arriving in May so we knew the South east region would be great weather wise and have less crowds.

We were also driving to Minnesota before hand for a work campaign, so decided to drive down from there to pick them up and then come back to Raleigh after Boston.

This is a road trip adventure is one you could do with any length of time, but I felt four weeks was just about the right time. It allowed us to go at our own pace, incorporate a few down days where we can recover from long stints on the highway, and maximise our time at each place.

In the following Boston to Dallas road trip, you can adjust the itinerary and number of days at each place as you see fit.

If you have more time, I will recommend some other highlights you can consider that we didn’t do on this trip, but have on other times.

You could even do it in as little as two weeks – Americans love those kind of fast paced vacations.

You decide.

Rather than adding in time frames into this itinerary, I’ll cover the route and activities and offer suggested time to spend in each region. That will make it easier for you to adjust.

At A Glance: Dallas to Boston Road Trip

Slave House, Franklin TN

For this road trip, we planned the itinerary around history and cultural experiences, including things my parents love, like music, movies, and war history.

I recommend you plan your travels around a theme or your passions and interests as there is so much to see and do in this region.

For example if you want beaches and theme parks, you can add in some side trips to the Gulf Shores in Alabama and Orlando.

There are so many options, and while driving times in the US can be pretty long (plan accordingly) you can “easily” detour to these places.

This road trip itinerary incorporates what we think are some of the best US cultural and historical experiences with some natural beauty thrown in!

To help you plan routes, travel time, and schedule, here is a map of this Dallas to Boston road trip…

If You’re Starting in Minnesota…

We started the first ten days of our Dallas to Boston road trip in Minnesota.

If you have more time on your side, I recommend starting your trip driving to Bloomington, Minnesota and exploring the Mall of America and a few other cool things to do there.

Take a visit to Paisley Park – Prince’s home and a stay at the Great Wolf Lodge – their favorite family resorts in the US.

Our US road trip adventure really went for six weeks, but the part from Dallas to Boston was four weeks.

Save Money on Sightseeing on this Dallas to Boston Road Trip

If you’re traveling to multiple cities included in this road trip itinerary over a 30 day period, we recommend you get the USA Sightseeing Pass.

This allows you to choose from over 300 attractions in 12 USA destinations saving you up to 70% on attraction fees.

Many of the cities/regions listed here are included in the sightseeing pass.

The Ultimate Dallas to Boston Road Trip

Now you have the finer details covered, it’s time to show you the route for the ultimate road trip from Dallas to Boston. Starting in…

Dallas, Tx

JFK Museum

We picked up my parents from the airport in the afternoon ready to start our month road trip the following morning.

We decided not to spend much time in Dallas as we wanted to do other things more.

We do recommend you stay here at least for the night to recover from jet lag and so have more energy for the month long fun in store.

I wasn’t planning to do much with our one night stay in Dallas with them as I know how brutal that flight from Australia can be and knew they’d be tired.

But we discovered the JFK Museum was just around the corner from our hotel at the Hyatt Regency.

As they are big JFK fans and have long had conspiracy style discussions over his death, we paid a quick visit (as it was closing time). I wish we had longer as we all really loved it.

Some other popular things to do in Dallas are:

 1. Visit the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which explores the life and legacy of President John F. Kennedy.
 2. Explore the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, featuring 66 acres of stunning gardens and walking trails.
 3. Experience the cowboy culture at the Fort Worth Stockyards, which offers rodeos, live music, and western-themed shops and restaurants.
 4. Check out the Dallas Museum of Art, showcasing an extensive collection of art from around the world.
 5. Shop and dine in the trendy Bishop Arts District, known for its eclectic boutiques and restaurants.
 6. Attend a Dallas Cowboys football game at AT&T Stadium, one of the largest and most impressive sports venues in the world.

Waco, Texas

Breakfast at Magnolia Table

Fixer Upper was something we watched with my parents back in Australia. We all loved it so of course, had to include a stopover in Waco on our way to San Antonio.

It’s only a two hour drive from Dallas so easy to do, and if you have more time, I recommend staying the night.

We loved Waco and it has so much more to offer than just Magnolia related attractions.

But these were definitely the highlights. Be sure to arrive early so you can beat the breakfast lines for Magnolia Table.

They can be up to 4 hours!!! We only had a 20 minute wait and it was worth it. My Dad said it was the best breakfast he ever had.

Don’t miss the cupcakes at the Silos either – delicious!

Waco Video:

San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio River Walk

Visiting San Antonio checked off my Dad’s long life dream to see the Alamo. I think it was one of the first movies I remember watching with him.

San Antonio is a beautiful city with its spectacular river walk and will give you an unique historical and cultural US experience.

We loved our stay at The Emily Morgan Hotel, an historic hotel of America, that overlooks the Alamo and is within walking distance to the river walk. It’s also the official Alamo Hotel so will enhance the experience. It’s also known as one of the most haunted hotels in the USA!!

We loved our tour of the Alamo and enjoying the San Antonio River walk.

I recommend staying for longer if you can as there is so much to do in this region.

We especially love the nearby Texas Hill Country and while Big Bend National Park is about a six hour detour west, if you have more time, it’s a fantastic national park free from crowds and located on the Rio Grande River and Mexican border.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Mardi Gras with kids

I highly recommend you stop over in New Orleans on your way to Memphis. We buzzed through this area, only stopping for a night in the middle of nowhere to break up the long drive.

New Orleans is one of our favorite city and possibly the most unique in the USA. It has the best food in the country, with a unique blend of French, Cajun and English cultures, amazing history, and such a fun attitude. Mardi Gras is a must you are visiting at the right time.

You could then either drive over into Florida, or drive up to Memphis via Jackson, Mississippi, or through Alabama which is a surprisingly good state.

You could pick up our North Carolina to Florida road trip plan to head up North via that way. I absolutely love Tennessee though!

New Orleans Video

Memphis, Tennessee

caz and girls posing out front of Graceland

If you love blues, BBQ and Rock N Roll, you will love a stop in Memphis, Tennessee. We recommend at least two nights exploring all this city has to offer and visiting the top Memphis attractions.

We visited as Mum is a die-hard Elvis fan and has wanted to visit Graceland ever since I can remember.

So it was to Graceland we went, even experiencing the treat of staying overnight at the Graceland hotel. We also enjoyed a visit to Sun Studios and afternoon tea with the Peabody Ducks.

One of the best Graceland Tours to do is the VIP Graceland tour. The VIP ticket price allows you to skip the queues and gives you access to VIP only museum exhibits, and access to his customized airplanes.

Memphis Video

Nashville, Tennessee

Family photo before the Grand Ole Opry Show

Of course, we had to stop at our favorite city in the US. Nashville is just so much fun! If you love music – any style – this is the place to come. I recommend staying here for at least three days.

We made sure my parents got the full Nashville experience with honky tonk music over lunch on Broadway, a blues session at the Bluebird Cafe, learning more about the history of music at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

We also visited the Johnny Cash Museum, Patsy Cline Museum, and did a backstage tour of the Ryman Theater, and a tour of Studio B.

And the highlight was taking them to see a show at the Grand Ole Opry, which included a backstage tour!

Nashville Video

Franklin, Tennessee

In Franklin, Tennessee

While in Nashville, you can take an easy day trip to Franklin, TN, a small charming town in the deep south full of history, good boutique shopping, and a vibrant music lifestyle.

Many famous musicians live out this way and nearby Liepers Fork, which we also visited for an evening of open mic at Puckett’s Groceries – an iconic musical experience in the Nashville region.

We also loved our tour of Carnton House, famous for a Civil War battle.

If you have more time…

Tennessee is a fantastic road trip destination. We highly recommend you visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park while in this area.

You will drive through it to get to the next destination on our list. My parents were more interested in the US cultural travel experiences then national parks.

We recommend at least two nights in the Smokies (and stay in the park if you can!)

If there’s no time on this road trip, make sure to add Tennessee to your next trip.

If you need more Tennessee tips, here are some guides that may be of interest to you:

Biltmore Estate, Asheville NC

The Biltmore Estate!

I knew my parents would love the opulence of Biltmore Estate, North America’s largest home. We love it so much we take all visiting family and have been three times.

I highly recommend the house and garden tour as well as spending time sampling wines at their winery – the highest selling vineyard in the USA!!

We stayed the night at the Biltmore Inn, which I highly recommend. It really enhanced the experience or us and was my parents’ favorite accommodation on our Dallas to Boston Road trip.

Biltmore is also close to Asheville a popular place to visit in the North Carolina mountains.

Lake Lure, NC

caz and family posing in front of Lake Lure North Carolina
Lake Lure

Are you ready for my favorite lake in the US?

Lake Lure is my happy place. There is something special about this serene place in the North Carolina mountains. May is a great time to visit before the summer rush as well – but summer is still great!

In Lake Lure we love to amble: paddleboard and swim in the lake, enjoy a boat tour of the lake learning about the history, visiting Chimney Rock State Park and enjoying ice cream while walking on the board walk.

Dirty Dancing lovers will appreciate this lake – it’s where several scenes in the movie were filmed, including the famous lift scene and each year they have a Dirty Dancing festival.

The most beautiful place to stay on the lake with magnificent views is the Lodge on Lake Lure. We loved it. I recommend two to three nights (or even longer if you want to rest awhile).

Lake Lure Video

Gettysburg, PA

Our informative Gettysburg battlefield tour

Gettysburg made a good stopping off point on our way up to New York. It was about halfway and worth stopping in for at least one night. We stayed for two and really liked it a lot.

I was impressed by the spirit and energy in the town and we all absolutely loved our driving tour with a knowledgeable guide of the Gettysburg Battlefield area. I never expected to like it as much as I did.

It also has a growing food and craft beer scene and ghost tours I want to come back and do as it’s meant to be the most haunted place in the USA.

If you want to be closer to the restaurants and attractions in Downtown Gettysburg, then we recommend staying at the historic Gettysburg Hotel.

If you have more time

You could drive through the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway on the way to Gettysburg, known as America’s favorite drive, to Roanoke and Virginia Blue Ridge.

If you have more time, you may wish to first head over to Williamsburg, Virginia to learn more about the first English settlement, and the Revolutionary War.

Then you would pass through Washington DC on your way to New York.

Gettysburg Video

New York City, NY

makepeace family posing on Brooklyn Bridge NYC
New York is great any time of the year. Our Christmas vacation to NYC

No trip to the US is complete without a visit to New York City. It is one of our favorite US cities. It’s as big and glitzy and wonderful as you’ve been told.

We stayed in New York for 4 nights at our favorite INNside New York Nomad with interconnecting rooms. It’s perfectly located to most New York attractions.

We checked off the biggest attractions with my parents including a Broadway show: Wicked, which they loved. New York was one of hteir favorite stops on our Dallas to Boston road trip. They were quite enamored.

New York City Videos

Martha’s Vineyard, MA

caz and her mom looking at Edgartown Lighthouse, Martha's Vineyard

Even though I expected something different from Martha’s Vineyard, we had a lovely three day stay on this tiny Massachusetts’s island, famous as a celebrity getaway place.

We didn’t see any, but we loved exploring Chappaquiddick and talking about the mystery surrounding Teddy Kennedy and the tragic accident that happened at the bridge here.

Plus we enjoyed walking around the small historical towns, finding the Jaws filming locations, seeing the beautiful cliffs of Aquinnah and a magnificent sunset at Menemsha.

Martha’s Vineyard video

Boston, MA

Ahh Boston, you quickly became one of my favorite US cities. It’s a city of firsts and superlatives!

On the list of firsts in the United States: public park, public school, printing press, newspaper, post office, police force, subway, first full face transplant, chocolate factory, anti-public smoking law, UFO sighting, and brothel.

I loved its beautiful European feel and incredible history. Plus it was super friendly, filled with sports lovers, and a high energy vibe.

We highly recommend the Harvard University tour, the Boston Freedom Trail and a baseball game at Fenway – so iconic!

We spent four nights staying at a lovely apartment rental south of the city.

Raleigh, NC

We of course, ended our Dallas to Boston road trip in Raleigh, North Carolina so my parents could enjoy some downtime from our home.

They LOVE Raleigh so were happy to dive deeper into exploring it.

They then flew home from Raleigh, to LA to Sydney.

You could easily fly back from Boston, or add in more places to visit in your trip.

Multigenerational Travel Tips

Travel with kids can be intense, especially if you homeschool! Throw in some grandparents, and it can be extra crazy.

If you’re traveling with multigenerations, we have you covered with a few tips:

We had an incredible road trip through the South East region with my parents. A few years later they are still raving about everything they saw and did.

It was a great experience to have as a family.

Tips for Traveling From Dallas to Boston Road Trip

Before you go, here are a few more tips to help you make this trip smooth.

 • Make sure you book accommodation with a parking lot. You might think this is common across America but it’s surprisingly not. If you stay in motels, then there is usually always parking.
 • If you are using an RV, make sure that the campsites you book have powered sites.
 • Make sure you book tours and attraction tickets in advance. You may find that tours are fully booked if you leave it too late to make a reservation.
 • Keep an eye on the weather. It’s not fun driving in thunderstorms!
 • Try to plan your driving times when there is daylight. That way you get to see some of the amazing scenes as you drive.
 • Download Google Maps. This way you have access to your route when you’re out of data or service.
 • Pick up information at the visitor centers. They are a great place to gather maps, local tips and information, as well as book tours and get the lay of the land.

If you’re a fan of the movie Forrest Gump, then you’ve probably already seen a lot of Beaufort, South Carolina, which was where the movie was mostly filmed.

Famous for its gorgeous South Carolina coast and sea islands, antebellum mansions and 19th century architecture, as well as delicious seafood and stunning beaches, you’ll find there are many things to do in Beaufort SC.

caz and savannah walking along the Waterfront at Beaufort, SC
Waterfront at Beaufort, SC

Beaufort is an exquisite and serene small historical city immersed in a forest of ancient live oaks and surrounded by marshlands, islands, waterways, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Not to mention it’s South Carolina’s second-oldest city.

If you’re wandering what to do in Beaufort, then you’ve come to the right place, as below I have listed some of the top attractions in the city.

Is Beaufort, South Carolina Worth Visiting?

historic home with flag out front Beaufort, South Carolina?
Old Point Neighborhood, Beaufort

Beaufort is rich in history and Gullah heritage, Southern Charm, natural beauty, and delicious local seafood, so yes, it is worth visiting.

It was named the South’s best small town by Southern Living Magazine and is located about halfway between Charleston and Savannah along the protected Intracoastal Waterway and South Carolina’s Atlantic Coast.

We first visited with my parents in 2010 when Kalyra was only two and a half. We still talk about that road trip between here and the other Beaufort in North Carolina.

Up there in NC they pronounce it Bowfort (as in bow tie.), which is the English pronunciation. Down here, they pronounce it Beaufort as in beautiful.

Back in 1562, the French explorer Jean Ribault claimed the Port Royal Harbor and set up a settlement on Paris Island.

caz and girls looking at boats
Shrimp Boats

This makes this area older than Jamestown in Virginia by 45 years and St Augustine in Florida by three years.

During this time period, the Spanish also attempted to colonize this area bordering the second deepest natural harbor on the East Coast, and the British came later.

All failed because of the fierce defense of the Yamasee people, the Native Americans who lived in these lands.

Life was abundant for them here and they did not want to leave.

Unfortunately, as our sad history goes, the English formally chartered Beaufort in 1711, turning it into a ship building hub and pushing the Yamasee out into North Florida with the Seminoles.

We can’t change history, but we can learn about it and acknowledge those who lived as part of this land as its custodians and how they suffered.

Beaufort is included in our best USA road trips list!

How many days do you need to visit Beaufort?

historic home under live oak trees
Old Point Neighborhood,

There is no end to a fantastic Beaufort vacation. You could stay here for weeks and soak up its history and the serenity of its natural beauty and slow, sweet Low-Country living!

But that’s probably not how you travel!

We recommend at least two nights/three days to enjoy all of the best the things to do in Beaufort SC. That means if you left on a Friday afternoon and returned on Sunday afternoon, you could easily make Beaufort a weekend getaway.

We also recorded a podcast on our trip to Beaufort.

Things to Do in Beaufort SC

There are so many historical, cultural, and outdoor adventure experiences in Beaufort. You will never be bored. Plan your trip well as you may not be able to do everything. Save some for your return.

We’ve included what we did in Beaufort on our short getaway. We think it’s a fantastic “Best of Beaufort’ experience that will speak to the beauty and diversity of this area.

1. Chill Out At Hunting Island State Park

So tropical

Welcome to an unspoiled forest of palmettos and pines leading you down to the ocean. The drive into the park towards the beach will transport you to another time another place.

This, (and Fripp Island) is the area where many of the Vietnam War scenes were filmed for Forrest Gump. You’ll notice as soon as you enter the jungle on one side and the marsh fields on the other, the sea-grass looking suspiciously like rice paddies.

This 5,000-acre protected park has 8 miles of well-maintained trails.

It was a little hot for hiking when we visited, but we did enjoy a quick stroll on the boardwalk that goes out over the marshlands to a small island and jetty popular for families crabbing.

We chose to relax on the North Beach section just under the famous Hunting Island Lighthouse. We had endless space to sit safely and comfortably and a pod of dolphins chose to swim about 100 meters away from us.

people on the beach at Fripp Island, South Carolina
Fripp Island Beach a bit busier than Hunting Island

Fripp Island is the most westward of South Carolina’s barrier islands and is next door to Hunting Island.

We visited as my Mum currently loves the Fripp Island house hunting show. We were happy to send her photos.

It has 3-miles of Atlantic beach coastline and many exclusive beach front homes and accommodations, as well as a Golf resort. It was busy here with vacationers and visitors zipping around on golf carts over the July 4th weekend.

Loved the beach houses on Fripp Island

We much preferred the more isolated Hunting Island Beach.

3. Explore Cypress Wetland Park

savannah looking at green swamp of Cypress Wetland Park
Perfect family attraction in Beaufort

Located on Port Royal island, Cypress Wetlands is a surprisingly stunning Beaufort attractions and the kind of hidden surprise you want on your Low-country vacation.

A short boardwalk will take you through the green swampland framed by cypress trees and Spanish moss where you can find camouflaged alligators and turtles and an abundant and diverse bird life.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many birds in one area. The prolific snowy white egrets stand out the most but you can also spot herons, hawks, eagles, owls, falcons, geese, ducks, and other migratory waterfowl.

It’s also one of the free things to do in Beaufort SC!

4. Check Out The Old Point Neighborhood

historic southern home under huge live oak tree Old Point Neighborhood,
LOVED this house – my favorite

One of the most beautiful Southern neighborhoods I’ve seen is The Point neighborhood, just to the east of downtown Beaufort.

It was the residential summer enclave of the wealthy plantation owners, as their island marshland homes became too hot and buggy.

Their summer homes caught the breezes off the river.

Live Oaks with their dripping Spanish moss drape together forming a canopy of the streets and a cooler place for you to walk and admire the stately antebellum mansion.

Grab a self-guided walking tour map from the visitor center so you can learn more of the history and stories behind them.

Don’t miss the spectacular views over the marshlands at the end of some of the lane-ways.

Fans of the Big Chill will love seeing the house from the movie.

It was my favorite alongside the one above with the gigantic live oak draping itself over the front garden and resting almost on the roof of the house.

5. Take A Horse and Buggy Tour of The Point (Sea Island Carriage Company)

Horse and buggy family activity in Beaufort

Even though you may have wandered the streets of The Point on your own, we recommend you also do the horse and buggy tour. It’s one of the most popular Beaufort SC things to do.

It’s probably best to do this carriage tour first for a great overview of Beaufort!

The commentary brings to life this area by sharing Beaufort’s unique history during the Civil War, as it was one of the only towns not burned by Sherman’s advancing army.

After the locals all fled their antebellum mansions in fear, Sherman decided to take them over for this troops and turn them into Union hospitals.

historic blue house with flag draping over it
So much historical insight on this tour

He freed the slaves – of which they far outnumbered the locals – and hired them to work in the hospitals.

Many were able to buy their masters homes as they owed large sums of taxes when they finally returned. They didn’t pay them as they felt they would not have homes to return to.

We learned this inspiring story and many more on this tour.

We also learned more about the people who once lived in the homes, those that do now, those used in movies and TV – such as Prince of Tides and the Big Chill – and unique features like the Stairs to Nowhere that are said by locals to be very haunted.

6. Visit Port Royal Sound Boardwalk and Observation Tower

savannah walking on boardwalk
Another easy walk for kids in Beaufort

An easy Beaufort thing to do is the Point Royal Island boardwalk which leads to an observation tower. I enjoyed the view from up here.

You could easily combine this with a visit to Cypress Wetlands and Fish camp.

Port Royal Boardwalk from above at the Observation Tower
Good views from the Observation Tower

There is a small historical area on Port Royal where you may wish to browse some of the old stores and historical homes. They are quite different to the Point’s mansions!

7. Look for Sharks Teeth at Sands Beach

girls on Sands Beach shark tooth hunting - ds
Good luck on your mission – fun for kids though

Do you like trying to find a needle in a haystack? Well you will love looking for Shark Teeth on Sands Beach.

We visited as it was next door to the boardwalk. We grew tired of it after five minutes. Your kids may love it. There were several groups of people combing the beach on the riverbank.

My question, “If this is one of popular things to do in Beaufort, and people come here daily, and possibly find sharks teeth, just what does that say about how many sharks are in the area?”

No. Jaws was not filmed here, but in Martha’s Vineyard. Perhaps the next version of it.

I’ll stick to swimming at Hunting Island Beach with the dolphins instead.

8. Sunset Seafood at Fishcamp on 11th

caz and girls eating dinner on deck of Fish Camp with marina views
Our favorite restaurant in Beaufort

Sunset dinner at Fishcamp on 11th on Port Royal Island was our best local’s tip.

We get so many of our tips on things to do from the locals. They often know where to find the best sunsets and how you can pair that with a delicious meal!

Fish Camp checked off all the boxes. After a ten-minute wait, we found ourselves at front row tables in the screened in porch overlooking the shrimp boats.

Our seafood dish was fresh local and delicious – try the stuffed flounder.

Our sunset was cancelled after a quick glimpse of its vibrant orange hues and taken over by a dramatic rolling thunderstorm, which surpassed all epic-ness of a sunset.

It was one of my favorite memories and experiences of our time in Beaufort. To see the raw and fierce side of Mother Nature is very humbling.

9. Catch The Sunset & Eat Seafood at Dockside

Another great Beaufort seafood restaurant

Just over the bridge from downtown Beaufort is the Dockside Restaurant on Lady’s Island.

You can sit inside near large windows or in the screened in porch to catch the views over Lady Island Marina and the waterways.

There is also outside seating for drinks and corn-hole under the trees.

Chow down on crab, shrimp, mussels, and locally caught fish. As Aussies we know good seafood and I was so impressed by the quality of the seafood in Beaufort.

10. Walk Around Downtown Beaufort’s Historic District

street in a town
Downtown Beaufort Bay Street

It’s easy to amble the streets of Downtown Beaufort in between your daily explorations.

Historic Bay Street is filled with local stores and galleries, upscale and casual restaurants – many with Beaufort river views and al fresco dining.

The Henry C Chambers Waterfront Park is a popular gathering spot and place to stroll with views of the marsh islands and intersecting waterways.

11. Bike the Spanish Moss Trail

savannah on the Spanish Moss Trail
Spanish Moss trail – great for cyclists

This 10-mile rail to trail paved path is a favorite for cyclist, joggers, and walkers.

I can see how it would be a fun experience to have in Beaufort if you cycled the trail and enjoyed the changing landscape.

We were a little underwhelmed, mostly because we were expecting a trail covered with Spanish Moss. Apparently, the trail takes you through neighborhoods where you can experience this.

caz and savannah walking the the Spanish Moss Trail
Just a short walk

We also got caught in a rainstorm so didn’t get to see much. We started at the Depot trail head close to downtown and turned right to head north.

We came back later and turned left, which recommend (based on what we saw) would be the better option as it does take you to marshland views which are pretty.

So, talk to more locals and the visitor center peeps and see what you can discover as the best spot for you OR just ride your bikes along the entire way.

12. Explore the Gullah culture and food

The Gullah are a group of African American people who settled in the Low South.

We found most of the Gullah culture was mostly on St Helena Island, but you can find more information about them in the Penn Center.

Penn Center is the site of one of the country’s first schools for freed slaves and one of the most significant African American historical and cultural institutions in existence today.

13. Take a Dolphin Watching Boat Tour

If you’re ever short wandering what to do in Beaufort SC, then finding a boat tour is always a good place to start.

Not only is it relaxing, but you also get to see some of the areas native wildlife.

14. Take a kayak tour of the river

Take a kayak out onto the area’s rivers and estuaries and witness Beaufort’s beauty up close.

We now have paddle boards so would love to take them out too!

15. Visit Old Sheldon Church

If you’re a history buff or photographer, you would love the ruins of this church sitting a beautiful forest of draped trees and Revolutionary War graves.

It was burnt by British troops during the Revolutionary war, and then plundered by Union troops at the end of the civil War after it was rebuilt in 1826.

16. Check Out Beaufort National Cemetery

rows of graves in the old beaufort national cemetary

This is one of the oldest United States National Cemeteries. The cemetery dates back to the Civil War era and features meticulously maintained grounds, monuments, and memorials, honoring the sacrifices and service of America’s military heroes.

The cemetery is one of the few in the South that was specifically established for Union soldiers and sailors.

As you wander through the cemetery, reflect on their legacy and what these heroes died for.

17. Dine at Plums Restaurant

If you’re visiting Beaufort and not sure where to eat, then Plums Restaurant is a must-visit.

Located on the riverfront, this charming restaurant offers a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, with indoor and outdoor seating.

The menu features a variety of dishes inspired by Lowcountry cuisine using fresh, locally sourced incredients.

You can try local seafood, homemade soups, and grilled meat dishes.

Plums Restaurant is the perfect spot to sit back and dine on exquisite food while enjoying the peaceful and tranquil ambiance of the riverside area of Beaufort.

18. Tour The Parris Island Museum & The Marine Corps Air Station

If you’re interested in aviation history, then you may want to visit Parris Island, which is home to The Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS).

The air station has a rich military history and played a vital role in World War II, the Korean War, and the Gulf War.

Visitors to Parris Island can tour the Parris Island Museum, which is a war memorial museum detailing the areas marine history.

Along with a visit to the museum, can tour behind the scenes of the base by advance reservation.

19. Sit Under the Chocolate Tree

Sit under the iconic tree where Forrest Gump proclaimed “life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re goin’ to get.”

The tree is located at 507 Carteret St, Beaufort. You may need to queue up to get a photo on this iconic filming location.

20. Step Back In Time at Beaufort History Museum

The Beaufort History Museum is the perfect place for history buffs to learn about the rich history and culture of the Lowcountry.

The museum features interactive exhibits, historical artifacts, and informative displays that showcase the area’s past, from the first Native Americans to the colonial era to the present day.

You can learn about the Gullah people, who have lived in the region for centuries, as well as explore the impact of the Civil War and Spanish American War on the area.

21. Stay at The Beaufort Inn

pink facade of the Beaufort Inn, South Carolina
The Beaufort Inn

Because Beaufort is a charming historical Southern city, your accommodation can become part of the destination highlights.

We wanted our accommodation to be unique to the Beaufort experience, so we stayed at The Beaufort Inn, located a block away from the main street and river, and the old Point neighborhood. And it’s only a short drive to all other Beaufort attractions.

The Beaufort Inn is spread out over several blocks of guesthouses, manicured gardens, and communal sitting spaces.

The beautiful Beaufort Inn

There are multiple options for where you can stay depending upon your traveling group!

There is the main pink inn, the historic Smith Wallace Mansion. It was built in 1897 by William Sidney Smith as a summer retreat for his family. Children under 12 cannot stay in this building!

The other accommodation options include gorgeous restored cottages and homes and range from Standard hotel/inn style rooms to those with living areas and fully equipped kitchens.

We had a two-double bedroom in one of the Palmetto Courtyard Queen Rooms.

It was beautiful on the outside and we had our own rocking chairs on the porch and sitting area out front with views of the quiet and charming Craven Street – voted most charming street in the South by Southern Living Magazine!

The rooms were a standard hotel room but beautifully decorated and wonderfully comfortable, with a great bathroom and shower.

Great accommodation for families in Beaufort

The Beaufort Inn is one of our favorite accommodation stays on the East Coast so far. We were impressed by the value of this Beaufort accommodation.

This included the following amenities:

 • Breakfast coupons each for three different restaurants nearby
 • Complementary entrance passes to Hunting Island State Park – one of the best things to do in Beaufort SC
 • Pool passes to Cat Island Pools
 • Free bike rental

Gardens at Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa

You may think this is the place for romantic getaways or golfing trips – it is that – but it’s also a special destination for families as well.

We spent a wonderful three-days here in partnership with Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa on our Georgia road trip.

Below are the many wonderful activities you can enjoy at Brasstown including a few nearby attractions and experiences.

Amazing hot tub setting

What we loved about our stay at Brasstown was the easy access to many different activities on the property.

Only a few steps from our room lead us to fun memory making experiences for us to share and talk about forever.

1. Relax at The Equani Spa

girls relaxing on chaise lounges at Spa at Brasstown Valley Resort

You cannot visit Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa without spending time at Equani Spa, a sanctuary for healing and restoration.

Equani means “Ridges” in local Cherokee, as the spa is located on Cherokee land who originally sought the land’s healing power. The Spa has carefully integrated design elements and activities indigenous to the tribe’s culture.

Many of the body treatments at Equani are inspired by the Cherokee heritage, which has been blessed by former Chief of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians, Joyce Dugan who says,

“Native people throughout this country have often been dishonored through misrepresentation of our cultural/traditional beliefs and customs, so it was with great relief and pleasure for me to visit The Equani Spa and witness for myself the tasteful and elegant representations of the Cherokee culture.”

2. Take Golf Lessons with a Pro

woman having Golf lesson at Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa

I always thought that with golf, you either had it or you don’t. I stayed away from the greens, because clearly, I did NOT have it.

On my first game of golf many years ago, I threw down the club after hole three, heading straight for Hole 19 exclaiming how stupid it was.

At Brasstown Valley Golf Course I learned that while natural golfing talent is a thing, you can also learn how to swing a club AND connect to the ball to make it travel high and far.

When you have lessons with a golf pro, anything is possible.

One of my favorite activities at Brasstown Valley Resort, surprisingly, was our golf lesson with Steve Phelps, the resort’s Director of Golf and PGA Professional.

He helped me make sense of golf with his explanations of golf clubs and how they work, the perfect design of golf balls, and how to properly swing a golf club and hit the ball.

Steve was patient, kind, and supportive with specific feedback to how I was swinging (incorrectly!). With each new correction, I started to GET it, improve, and work on that muscle memory.

Most importantly, I started hitting the ball better AND began to actually consider that perhaps golf could be something I COULD enjoy and take up.

I mean, is there a more beautiful setting for an outdoor leisurely activity?

Craig, being the more natural sportsman, has always been able to hit the ball relatively straight and far, but not as consistently as he’d like and he’s never had a golf lesson before, so was looking forward to the tips and insights to improve his game.

man playing golf
Craig on the driving range

With a few adjustments from Steve regarding his grip, stance, and backswing, he was hitting the ball more consistently, and as he likes to say, he likes golf, but LOVES it when he’s hitting his drives straight and getting his putts in!

3. Play a Round of Golf at Brasstown Valley Golf Course

golf course

Realizing my golfing limitations, I sped off on the golf cart after our lesson at the driving range, and left Craig to play a few holes with his new golfing friends without my air swings impeding their fun.

One day, I’ll feel confident to join them.

The Brasstown Valley Golf Course has 18 holes of championship golf for all levels of play.

Both Golf Digest and Leading Golf Courses of America ranked Brasstown Valley Golf Course as one of the top golf courses in Georgia.

If you don’t want to play a round of golf, grab yourself a cocktail, stand on the lodge verandah and admire the beauty of the course while you watch others swing away merrily.

Check out their golf packages. (don’t forget the code 40MP when you book a stay)

4. Horseback Riding at the Stables at Brasstown Valley

people riding on horses
Family fun

Horseback riding is a family adventure we often seek out when we travel and talk about long after the trip has ended.

The horses at the Stables at Brasstown Valley were the prettiest I’ve ever ridden. My palomino horse, Hermann, was my dream horse as a child and his willful, confident personality delighted me.

As soon as we finished our ride, Savannah shared with me her savings plan to one day buy the horse she rode, eBay.

Brasstown Stables has five miles of horse trails winding through hardwood forests, through open fields and beside crystal-clear streams. Let’s not forget the mountain views at every turn.

Horse riding at Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa

The Stables primarily offer one and two-hour guided mountain trail rides, accommodating all experience levels, from beginner to advanced.

5. Hiking the Appalachian Mountains

Enjoy the beauty of the hardwood forest, flowering plants, mountain scenery, and wildlife viewing by hiking in the Appalachian Mountains.

Brasstown Valley Resort has 9.2-miles of wilderness trails right at your doorstep.

The popular Miller Trek starts at the resort and winds its way into the Chattahoochee National Forest for approximately 6 miles. There is also a shorter 2.5-mile loop.

6. Enjoy the Resort Amenities

people in a hot tub

You can balance the resort activities with more sedate family time with the resort amenities.

Well, that depends on how rowdy you may get playing a game of air hockey against each other in the Arcade Game room or how many laps you want to do in the indoor pool or seasonal outdoor pool.

I was more content to soak in the hot tubs, steam in the sauna, and lounge on the poolside chairs listening to the birds and soaking up the beauty of the views.

There is also a nightclub, though we didn’t go there, and outdoor tennis courts for those who want to work on their serve.

people sitting on lounge chairs

I was also happy to get a short workout on the treadmill in the fitness center. Running is usually not my thing, but the views of the garden took away all the “pain” of it.

My tip is to head straight for the Equani Spa after your workout!

7. Dining at Brasstown Valley

people sitting at a table eating

Enjoy the resort dining room with a signature cocktail before dinner on the verandah with stunning sunset mountain views.

Martini lovers will be very happy with the diversity of martinis on offer from classic Dirties to dessert-like Godiva Chocolate.

For our kids, the hot chocolates and French Toast were a hit at breakfast time. You can also get a full breakfast if you like to have a big breakfast before exploring.

Move onto outstanding meals at dinner time such as Bang Bang Shrimp for your appetizer and mains with delicious choices like fresh Carolina Mountain Trout, Ribeye, Macadamia Chicken and Shrimp and Grits.

Don’t skimp out on the dessert. Get ready to crack that Creme Brulee or devour a rich (and thick) slice of Triple Chocolate Mousse Cake.

On busier weekend nights, the resort often has seafood and prime rib buffets.

8. Eating at Brassies Grill

Brassies Grill is your 19th Hole, the more casual dining option for a quick lunch or cozy dinner. Relax at the bar, watch sport on TV, or play a game of pool or darts.

You’ll find favorites such as burgers, blackened quicken quesadillas, beer cheese and pretzels, and chili cheese tots.

I highly recommend the unique smoked salmon BLT. The mouthwatering salmon is smoked in house.

9. Sit By the Verandah Fire Pit

people sitting around a fire

Wrap up your day in one of our favorite ways – by the crackling fire on the verandah of the Fireside Lounge. It’s perfect for stargazing and conversations.

Rocking chairs line wide verandahs for soaking up an expansive vista that includes Brasstown Bald, Georgia’s highest point.

10. Shop at Pro-Shop & Country Store

Not only can you get all your golfing gear at the Pro-Shop, but you can also find some unique homeware, gifts, and clothes at the Brasstown Valley Country Store.

I was impressed, not just with the quality of products, but the reasonable resort shop price tags.

Downstairs you’ll also find the Emporium, a place to find locally made products such as cheeses, ice cream, wine, and home goods.

Accommodations at Brasstown Valley

From secluded cottage tranquility to modern suites amidst the hub of activity, Brasstown Valley Resort and Spa has an array of accommodation options to suit the purpose of your getaway.

No matter what accommodation style you choose, you’ll be surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the North Georgia Mountains.

Our legendary mountain lodge has 102 gorgeous guest rooms, including five, one-bedroom suites. All rooms come with either a queen or king bed, air conditioning, free WiFi, private bathrooms, an in-room safe, an ironing board and iron, and toiletries.

We had interconnecting rooms with a private sitting area in one and two queen beds in the other, both with premium bedding.

It was perfect for our family we love the kind of space that helps us remotely work and learn while we travel.

people sitting on couches

The gas fireplaces in the rooms were a lovely feature. Some rooms have private balconies. Ours looked over the pool area with great views of the mountains.

The Cottages

The Brasstown Valley cottages are tucked in the woods offering your family seclusion and immediate access to hiking trails and outdoor beauty. They cater to groups of various sizes.

You will love the kitchen, large wood-burning fireplaces in the living area, and the wraparound covered decks bringing you closer to nature.

Equani Spa’s Private Suite

bedroom

For pure indulgence, why not stay at the private suite on the top level of the Equani Spa?

It’s an 825-square-foot suite with a private deck that has fantastic views of the North Georgia Mountains.

Inside you’ll find a jacuzzi tub and the biggest shower you’ve ever seen. We’re talking about an “experience shower” providing a full-sensory experience with a double-drench shower head, steam, aromatherapy, LED lights, marine speakers, and 12-head Swiss shower bars.

Now that’s a Brasstown Valley moment!

You also have a separate living area and stone stacked gas fireplace in the bedroom. The BEST feature is the short flight of stairs to spa rejuvenation.

Learn more about all their accommodation options here.

Other Property Amenities

I’ve shown you what you can do here, and what you can expect from the rooms, but if you think that’s all that the resort has to offer then you can think again! Here are some other facilities and optional extras you can find here…

 • Valet parking
 • Laundry services and dry cleaning
 • Wheelchair accessible parking and rooms
 • Service animals are allowed (but no other pets)
 • Late check-out time – you need to check out by noon, although check-in is from 4pm which is quite late.

Experiences Outside of Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa

You’re in the heart of the Blue Ridge so have endless opportunities to explore outside the Brasstown Valley Resort property.

While we were content to just enjoy what the resort had to offer, we did love experiencing a few nearby attractions.

1. Visit Crane Creek Vineyards

woman walking through a vineyard

A winery in Georgia? I was just as surprised. It turns out, there are dozens of wineries here, many of them within a short drive from Brasstown Valley. The Crane Creek Vineyards were just a 10 min drive from Brasstown Valley Resort and Spa.

The Southeast is known typically for sweet muscadine wines, which is not my preferred drop.

I was pleased to discover wines at Crane Creek Vineyards that were dry, light, and refreshing, and paired with the kind of views you’d expect to see in Tuscany.

You can choose to enjoy them from the vineyard deck, while wandering past the grapevines, or from the Adirondack chairs in the garden.

Craig and I chose the latter with a tasting flight each – mine heavy on the whites, while Craig’s had a balance in color.

We recommend the Zusa for its light summery flavors of melon and mango. For those wanting more depth and spice, you can’t go past the award-winning red, Hellbender.

people sitting on lawn chairs holding wine

Every Friday, May to November, Crane Creek has live music out on the vineyard decks and delicious homemade seasonal appetizers.

Owner Eric Seifarth has created a wine-tasting experience at Crane Creek to replicate the joy he experienced sampling Italian wines while he was stationed in Northern Italy.

2. Go Boating on Lake Chatuge

girls Boating on Lake Chatague

With over 130-miles of shoreline, Lake Chatuge is one of the larger open bodies of water in the Blue Ridge, Smoky Mountains region.

Its picturesque setting of towering mountains surrounding its distant shores, and access to an abundance of lake recreation activities, make it a popular place for visitors to the region.

We rented a pontoon boat, and a speedboat from the marina to enjoy an hour soaking up the views.

Stay a while longer. Throw in a line, swim, or pack a picnic lunch to eat in a secluded cove.

3. Visit Anna Ruby Falls

Less than an hour’s drive from Brasstown Valley Resort, you’ll find the spectacular Anna Ruby Falls.

It quickly became one of my favorite waterfalls in the USA for its stunning lush forest setting and its twin falls thundering down.

You can read more about it in our post about our stay at nearby Unicoi State Park & Lodge.

4. Visit Brasstown Bald

Only 20-minutes from Brasstown is Brasstown Bald, the tallest mountain in Georgia which offers views of Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Up there you can just enjoy the views, or access four hiking trails ranging from 1/2 to 6 miles in length.

5. Visit the Nantahala National Forest

bridge over a river surrounded by orange and red trees
Nantahala forest

Nantahala National Forest is only a short drive away and is the perfect place to experience the amazing nature of the region.

From whitewater rafting to an exhilarating hike along the Appalachian Trail, there are endless opportunities for exploration.

You can go zip-lining through the scenic forests, mountain biking on the well-maintained trails, and rock climbing along some of the most stunning cliffs in North Carolina.

For those looking for a mild adventure, canoeing or kayaking down its peaceful rivers is a great way to take in all its beauty, or you can visit the nearby Rollins Planetarium.

6. Visit the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds

Georgia Mountains Fairgrounds is a great family attraction nearby, offering carnival rides, live music concerts, and street food stalls.

Get a thrill on the go-karts or bumper boats, enjoy some delicious fair food, or attend one of the many annual festivals such as the Georgia Mountain Fair, the Fall Festival, and Georgia’s Official State Fiddlers’ Convention.

There’s always something happening at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds.

Staying at The Adventure Lodge at Amicalola Falls State Park was the perfect way for our family to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy a tranquil and relaxing getaway.

Surrounded by breathtaking views of the mountains and majestic Amicalola Falls, it was a place where you can just disconnect and let nature inspire you.

The Lodge at Amicalola Falls State Park

“This is my kind of getaway,” I exhaled from my Adirondack chair with wine in hand and flames leaping out of the fire pit.

Our cabin was decked on the back with only forested views in front. The Talbott Brothers on Spotify were reminding me to stay Young and the rushing sound of Amicalola Falls as it tumbled down over its lip in the distance relaxed the stress out of me.

We would spend the day exploring the miles of hiking trails or take a scenic drive through the North Georgia Mountains, before coming back to our cozy cabin and relaxing in front of the fire and sharing our fondest memories of the day.

If you’re ready to relax amidst nature or head out on an outdoor adventure holiday, then here’s what to expect from a stay at The Lodge at Amicalola Falls State Park and our experience to inspire you!

Where is Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia?

Top of Amicalola Falls
Beautiful Amicalola Falls

Amicalola Falls State Park is located within Chattahoochee National Forest between Ellijay and Dahlonega in Dawsonville, Georgia.

It is just over an hour north of Atlanta, two hours southeast of Chattanooga, TN, and three hours south of Asheville, NC.

The park is less than an hour’s drive from Blue Ridge, Helen, and Hiawassee.

Which lead me to ponder several times during our visit, how can this place be so close to Atlanta, yet so blissfully quiet?

Part of the blessings of traveling mid-week and during the month of May is a little extra serenity before summer breaks out.

What Makes Amicalola Falls State Park Special?

people relaxing around campfire at Amicalola Falls State Park
Relaxing by our fire

The best thing about Amicalola Falls State Park is that it offers the best of both worlds.

You can enjoy many outdoor activities such as swimming, fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, and more.

Or you can simply relax and enjoy nature, spending an evening spent under the starlit night sky on the terrace or cozy up by the lodge’s outdoor fire pits.

As soon as I melted into the natural surroundings by that fire pit, I scrapped all our plans to possibly venture out the next day to visit a few farms and wineries in the surrounding Dawson County region of the North Georgia Mountains.

“You know what, Craig. This is all I need right now. I’m not leaving Amicalola Falls State Park. I’m going to wake up slowly, do a couple of hiking trails to experience the falls, and then I’m going to lap up the serenity of this cabin and the surrounding forest. There’s nothing else that will give me greater bliss.”

And we did just that. Four nights at the state park doing nothing else but enjoying the adventures this stunning Georgia State Park had to offer.

Things To Do At Amicalola Falls State Park: An Adventure Lodge

Our cabin. Picture yourself here?

If you think sitting in the forest for four days would be a little too heavy on the boredom scale for you, let me tell you that Amicalola is known as an adventure park

Experiencing the grandeur of Amicalola Falls is not the only attraction on offer. There are a range of outdoor activities available that move from sedate to thrilling – it is one of Georgia’s most popular state parks for a reason!

1. See the Beauty of Amicalola Falls

Amicalola Falls State Park, Georgia
Amicalola Falls is gorgeous

Of course, you would expect Amicalola Falls to be the highlight of your visit to the state park named in its honor.

Amicalola means “Tumbling Waters” in Cherokee, which is exactly what your senses will experience in this Georgia State Park. At 729 ft high, it is the highest waterfall in Georgia and the third-highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River.

Amicalola Falls cascading over rocks
Many viewpoints to take in

What’s unique about these falls is that you can experience it from multiple angles – from the top, the bottom, the middle, and views from far away. I recommend you do all the above.

When we visited, part of the trail was closed due to storm damage so we had to navigate around a little so we could still experience all the different approaches.

2. Hike Amicalola Falls Trail (from the bottom to the top)

stairs leading up the sid eof Amicalola Falls, Georgia
Bottom of falls

The ultimate is to hike from the base of the falls of Amicalola Falls (starting from the Visitor Center at the park’s entrance) right to the top where the lodge is located.

From the Visitor Center, the trail takes you through a lush green forest beside the creek and the Reflection Pool, popular for trout fishing.

Pause here to take in the views of the Falls coming down the mountain, but not for too long as the height may scare you away from finishing your walk!

From there, the path has a short but steep climb to the bottom of the falls where you have views of the falls cascading down the rock face and beautiful views of the valley behind you.

Then, you climb a flight of steps to the middle observation deck and then another 425 stairs to the top.

Plan to stop at the lodge for lunch and a drink after to soak up the views before taking the easier walk back down.

It will be a truly memorable experience!

4. Hike The Top of the Falls to the Middle

Top of Amicalola Falls with view out to valley
View from top of the falls

Alternatively, you can walk down from the top of the falls for a shorter hike to the middle observation deck.

This will involve those 425 steps down – remembering that you’ll need to come back up. I’m of reasonable fitness and it took me about five minutes and didn’t feel as bad as it looks – you can do it!

5. Walk The Flat Path to the Middle Observation Deck

people walking the trail Trail at Amicalola Falls
The easiest option

There is a much easier and flatter trail that takes you to the middle observation deck. You can, of course, take the steps up to the top from here, or down to the bottom (if they are open).

NOTE:

When we visited (May 2021), the section between the middle observation deck and the bottom of the falls was closed in order to repair storm damage.

So, we hiked from the top to the middle, and then from the Visitor Center to the bottom of the falls. That cut out about 300 stairs, but gave us the same views and experience.

6. Go Zip Lining on the Screaming Eagle Aerial Adventure Tour

Time to add Ralph to your USA Bucket List.

Ralph is The Super Zip high above the canopy at Amicalola Falls State Park.

We’re talking a 2,400-ft long, 250 ft high cable zooming you at speeds of up to 50-60 miles per hour and offering you outstanding mountain and valley views. On a clear day, you can even see out to the Atlanta Skyline.

I loved this zipline and only wished it went for longer.

The Screaming Eagle zip lining experience at Amicalola Falls State Park can last up to four hours over three levels of courses comprising of zip lines and suspension bridges.

Level 3 takes in all 16 zip lines and is where you’ll find Ralph.

There is a weight restriction of 95lbs. Savannah was so disappointed she was too light for Ralph, but she enjoyed experiencing Stanley, Number 2 on the zip line thrill odometer.

Kalyra was pretty nervous to do Ralph, and I had to coax her quite a bit as I knew she’d love it and regret it if she walked away.It is a delicate dance with your kids to help them navigate past fear. As predicted, after it she said it was “awesome and not as scary as I thought.”

7. Try 3D Archery

We are going deep into the forest hunting animals on this archery course with a difference.

You’ll come across foam modeled animals such as deer, bear, foxes and the final prize – an elusive dinosaur.

The 3D Archery course at Amicalola is loads of fun and feels like the real deal. You’ll learn the basics of using a bow and arrow and will take shots at the foam 3D targets in the outdoor range.

The 3D archery is a fun family activity, which our girls really loved and felt empowered doing.

8. Have A Go At Tomahawk Throwing

Can you hot a bullseye?

Our family will always remember our first time Tomahawk throwing.

Craig was front of camera and attempting to nail a bullseye after his line, “this is my first time throwing a tomahawk.”

He shocked himself more than the rest of us when he truly did nail the bullseye! It was hilarious (stay tuned for our video).

We enjoyed learning how to throw a tomahawk and attempting to nail the bullseyes ourselves. The girls did great. I think I landed only 1 or 2 but had fun doing so.

Throwing an axe at the target is harder than it looks.

7. Meet The Birds of Prey

On weekends, you can spend time getting to know a few of the park’s animals at animal meet and greets.

We loved meeting Sir Lands-a-Lot, a rescued red-tailed hawk who did not want to fly away to be wild again. He was raised with ducks and now quacks like one. Hearing that was an Amicalola moment.

We also got to touch a non-venomous corn snake named Kellogg. The girls were afraid at first, but once they did, it didn’t take long for them to fall in love with it curling around their arms.

Once you hold and touch a snake, you experience how special they are and fear them less. I love how Amicalola gives you this opportunity to experience it firsthand.

Do not touch wild snakes, btw!

8. Hike Part of the Appalachian Trail

Approach trail to Appalachian Trail
Appalachian Approach Trail

Did you know Amicalola Falls State Park is where scores of people each year begin their once-in-a-lifetime adventure hiking the Appalachian Trail?

The 5-mile hike on the approach trail begins at the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail from the Visitor Center and leads to the base of Springer Mountain, the official beginning of the Appalachian Trail, which then continues for another 2,000+ miles to Maine.

You can walk a section of it, or just get your photo taken at the stone archway signaling the beginning and tell all your friends you did it.

9. Hike the Mountain Laurel Loop

This moderate hiking trail is a looped trail that sits on the ridge above Amicalola Creek and has amazing views of the old Appalachian approach trail.

The hike is only about 1 km, but you can extend it by hiking onto the Spring Trail or the West Ridge Falls trails.

Park the car at the West Ridge Falls Access Trail and hike from there.

“You cannot beat a view like this,” I demanded of the girl’s attention as we sat down at the Amicalola Falls State Park Lodge for dinner the first evening.

“Can you pay attention for a minute? Look at it. A seeping vista filled with forested mountains, not a sign of civilization in sight. Do you know how rare this is? Especially in the USA.”

Amazing views!

Amicalola Lodge turns an ordinary state park experience into an extraordinary one.

Perched in the middle of the forest on one of the tallest mountains in Georgia is the grand lodge with magnificent vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

You will love coming in and out of the lodge as you move about your day, either organizing activities, eating, sleeping, or just relaxing in its beautiful foyer and outside patio.

Magic sunsets from the lodge

Another highlight of your stay at Amicalola State Park is watching the sunset behind the mountains from the lodge.

You’ll notice a quiet gathering of guests with their glasses of wine and chairs perched on the edge of the mountain and around the fire pit.

Perfect way to end your day

Again, with this view you’ll be amazed at the complete absence of any human life – just a few hawks circling around with endless flight space over the valley and mountains.

Dining: Cascades Restaurant

Inside the lodge, the Cascades Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offers traditional American and Southern classic cuisine.

The pecan crusted trout is a crowd pleaser, as is the rib eye steak. On busy days, they have buffets for all three meals with plenty of choices to suit all tastebuds.

The standout feature is the floor to ceiling glass windows offering panoramic views of the mountains.

Head to the patio for your pre or post dinner drinks, sunset views, and quiet firepit conversations.

Accommodation at Amicalola Falls

Take your Amicalola Falls experience to new heights by staying within the state park. From suites and rooms to cabins and campgrounds, you choose your level of comfort and mountain retreat style.

After checking into our mountain cabin, we took one look over the back deck and started carrying wood down to the firepit below. It’s the perfect space to unplug and unwind deep in nature.

I loved hearing the rushing sound of Amicalola Falls from our campfire in front of the cottages. And the girls and I had loads of fun dancing together on the huge deck of the cabin. Talk about Extraordinary – our moves were just THAT!

These rustic cabins are perfect for families, that are just rustic in look and feel.

Inside you’ll find the modern facilities you’ll love from kitchens, cozy fireplaces, separate bedrooms (1-3), ensuite bathrooms, and WiFi – remote learning and working families will love that feature.

You can choose two locations for your Amicalola Falls cabins; the wooded mountaintop or creekside below the Falls.

What Makes Unicoi State Park & Lodge Special?

girl Kayaking at Unicoi State Park, Georgia
Such a pretty lake

One of the things we have fallen in love with the most about the Southeast is lake life.

There is a certain kind of serenity that only a lake offers. It provides a stillness my meditating-loving psyche gravitates towards. It feels ancient and grounding and calls me to peace.

So as soon as we drove up to our barrel-shaped cabin in the forest at Unicoi State Park and Lodge in Georgia and saw the lake from our deck, I knew we were in for a peaceful family retreat.

My body moved fast to unload and unpack. Then I declared, “I am going for a walk around the lake. It’s only 2.5 miles and we have enough time before dinner.”

I could barely wait for Craig to put on his shoes.

Lovely views on the lake trail

Don’t worry if you can’t stay embraced in that quiet, still energy for too long – Unicoi State Park & Lodge has plenty of adventurous activities to balance it out for you.

Where Is The Adventure Lodge, Unicoi State Park?

Stream in Unicoi State Park, GA

Only two miles from the Alpine Village of Helen in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains in Tanglewood, Unicoi State Park & Lodge is one of the most popular and loved state parks in Georgia.

This 1,050-acre state park is centered around beautiful Lake Unicoi within the Chattahoochee National Forest.

girl standing by kayaks at unicoi lake

The name Unicoi comes from the Cherokee word, “unega,” meaning “white.” As the state park stands on the original Unicoi Trail – a trading path that connected Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia – it’s assumed that Unicoi refers to “place of the white man”, or “the white man’s road”.

It’s where European traders swapped axes, guns and cloth with remote Cherokee villages for furs, deer skins and ginseng.

However, it is said the name could also refer to the white fog of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Things to Do At Georgia’s Adventure Lodges Unicoi State Park

This is more than a state park with a few hiking trails and the lodge is known as one of Georgia’s Adventure Lodges for a reason!

Unicoi offers memorable experiences like paddle boarding, 3-D archery, fly fishing, an adrenaline-pumping zip line course, and a nearby spectacular waterfall.

1. See the Beautiful Anna Ruby Falls

A waterfall surrounded by trees
The twin falls of Anna Ruby

It didn’t take long on the short hiking trail to the Anna Ruby Falls for me to mark it as one of my favorite waterfalls in the USA.

The trail through the lush verdant forest past the meandering, full-flowing and cascading Smith Creek was enough for me to know this place was special.

It’s special enough to be protected from within the Chattahoochee National Forest and designated as the Anna Ruby Falls National Recreation Area. It borders the Unicoi State Park, which gives you easy access to visit. In fact, you must go through Unicoi State Park to get to the Visitors Center at the falls.

Anna Ruby Falls is a double waterfall. At 150 feet above, the Curtis Creek and York Creek (which starts high on Tray Mountain on the Appalachian Trail) come thundering down the cliff face and merge together at the bottom to form Smith Creek, (which runs through the park).

It is an impressive sight and a waterfall vista you won’t forget.

A waterfall in a forest

If the one mile return trail is not enough for you, you can hike the 5 miles from Anna Ruby Falls back to Unicoi Lodge.

However you choose to experience it, Anna Ruby Falls is a must when exploring the North Georgia mountains.

2. Do The Unicoi Zipline & Aerial Adventure Tour

people Ziplining at Unicoi State Park, GA

Time to get out of your comfort zone for an adrenaline rush 100ft in the air zooming across zip lines that range from 75 to 2,000 feet long.

The Aerial Adventure Tour has three zip line courses, from novice lines to the ultimate adrenaline rush, that take you across up to 19 zip lines and 9 suspension bridges.

Be prepared for the ultimate end on the half-mile, double zip line over the lake and see if you can kick up a splash with your feet. (FYI: You really can’t!)

people ziplining over a forest near a lake

Unfortunately, our ziplining adventure was cancelled due to a thunderstorm. We were all devastated, but all great places need an excuse to return!

3. Kayak or Paddleboard on Unicoi Lake

people kayaking

Not only do I love being in the presence of lakes, but my other favorite thing to do on them is stand up paddle boarding. I haven’t found an outdoor activity that offers me as much Zen as silently paddling across a calm lake.

Paddling on Unicoi Lake was sublime with its pretty reflections, mountain backdrop and water so clear I could see sunken trees and giant fish swimming past.

Craig and the girls paddled beside me in their kayaks. Then we switched all of them out for a leg-pumping workout on the four-person Pontoon Pedal Boats.

You can rent kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and pedal boats from the Visitor Center.

4. Go Fly Fishing in the Lake and Streams

man Fishing at Unicoi State Park, Georgia

Throw in a line, anglers, the fish are biting!

Unicoi Lake is a great place to catch bass, bluegill and catfish and Smith Creek is the place for trout fishing, as it is stocked on a regular basis.

The section below the lake and dam (Lower Smith Creek) is catch-and-release only from Nov 1 – May 14. Fly fishing classes are offered by the park.

5. Hit The Hiking Trails at Unicoi State Park

There are five Unicoi state park trails of various lengths and difficulties.

All will take you through beautiful, forested settings, crossing streams and creeks and passing mountain flowers such as rhododendrons and mountain laurels.

Here are 3 Unicoi hiking trails we recommend:

Lake Trail

person looking at view of Lake Trail at Unicoi State Park

The Lake Trail was what Craig and I walked when we first arrived. It’s an easy 2.5-mile loop that winds around the edge of the 53-acre Unicoi Lake.

You’ll have beautiful views of the lake and mountains and you even pass by a beached area if you’d like a swimming break.

people swimming in a lake

Smith Creek Trail

The Smith Creek Trail is 4.8 miles one way and leads from the campground through the Chattahoochee National Forest to the head of the Smith Creek at Anna Ruby Falls.

Unicoi/Helen Trail

Why not make a fun day of exploring Alpine Helen by walking there?

A 3-mile moderate to strenuous trail will take you to Helen’s Unicoi Hill City Park. It will pass the Mountain Biking Trail and Bottoms Loop Trail along the way – so technically you’ve checked off three Unicoi trails in one!

Archery & Air Gun Range

girl shooting a fake gun
Air Gun Range

One family activity we loved experiencing on our Georgia state parks road trip was archery; so much that the girls have asked us to find an archery course in Raleigh for them.

Unfortunately, due to the thunderstorm we missed the 3-D Archery Range within Unicoi, but again – we’ll be back!

The Archery & Air Gun Range is a shooting facility that is set up for static archery target practice, 3-D archery target practice and air gun rifle target practice.

6. Stay in a Barrel Shaped Cabin

Cabins at Unicoi State Park, GA

We’ve stayed in plenty of unique accommodation during our travels, but this was our first time sleeping in a barrel shaped cabin.

Immersed in the forest on the edge of the lake you’ll find a small village of these cabins built on stilts. The structural design of the Unicoi State Park cabins allows the flora and fauna of the forest to exist with minimal human obstruction.

people sitting in rocking chairs on deck unicoi state park cabins

Enjoy the rocking chair views of the forest and glimpses of the lake from your deck. The zipline was out the front of ours so we could watch the adrenaline junkies zipping past with wide smiles.

The cabins are spacious with two bedrooms upstairs, while downstairs you have a full kitchen, bathroom, living and dining rooms, and even a fireplace to enjoy.

And yes, the inside is also shaped like a barrel.

Aside from the Barrel Cabins, there are also rustic cabin options on the Smith Creek and larger lake view Deluxe Cabins.

Don’t forget use coupon code: 40MP when booking a stay at Unicoi Lodge.

7. Visit Helen Waterpark

Helen Waterpark is just a few minute’s away from the state park and provides an aquatic oasis with water rides such as the Helens Falls Flume, a 6-story high body slide.

You can ride down one of the many tube slides or try your hand at stand-up paddle boarding in the lazy river.

It’s a great place to go when you need to cool off on hot summer days or have small kids who need more excitement than the playground.

It also has an interactive Splash Pad for toddlers and a massive Olympic-size swimming pool.

Other Accommodations at Unicoi State Park & Lodge

No matter your style of getaway, the Unicoi State Park has your mountain retreat accommodation covered.

We highly recommend the barrel-shaped cabins for families, but you also have the following options with luxury amenities:

Unicoi Lodge

people sitting around a fire

Staying at Unicoi Lodge places you in the hub of all things happening at the park.

It’s where you’ll find the activity center, a small store with locally sourced goods, pool tables, restaurants, and communal fire pits in the grassed courtyard.

The Lodge at Unicoi State Park

The lodge has 100 comfortable, modern guest rooms of various sizes and plenty of those have mountain views.

Each room comes with a snack bar, TV with cable channels, free self parking, a private bathroom with a shower/tub combinations and hair dryers, and toiletries.

Some rooms come with a lounge area. Guests staying at the lodge can enjoy a weekend buffet breakfast.

The Adventure Camp

Traveling as a group or with extended family?

The Adventure Camp at Unicoi offers a communal glamping experience, with five sleeping cabins, a communal kitchen, and separate men’s and women’s full bathrooms. You also have access to a picnic area, grills, and a campfire.

The Adventure Camp has an idyll secluded location on Smith Creek where you can fish for trout or cook s’mores over the fire by the creek.

Campground

The Unicoi State Park campground is in a beautiful, forested setting right near the Visitor Center and lake. There are 84 campsites including RV full hook ups and walk in primitive tent sites.

Other Amenities at Unicoi State Park Lodge

As well as having excellent accommodation options and plenty of things to do, you can also take advantage of these other amenities.

 • Extra beds for children. You can request infant beds and cribs for ages 0-2, but not extra beds for adults.
 • Ticket assistance for nearby attractions.
 • 24 hour security and smoke detectors.
 • 24 hour reception.
 • Shuttle services to Helen on Friday – Sunday.
 • Business center and conference center.
 • Daily housekeeping.
 • It’s also a great destination for weddings and would make for a beautiful wedding venue.

Check-In/Check-Out Instructions

It’s very easy to check in and out of the Lodge, you simply need to show your reservation confirmation and a government-issued photo identification and the credit card or debit card you paid with.

You should make sure to report any special requests or specific accessibility needs to the lodge before arriving.

You may be asked for a cash deposit and incidental charges. There are also extra-person charges and a resort fee. You may also be asked to pay a park fee when using booking platforms.

Note: the time of check-in is after 4pm and check-out is at 11am.

Dining at Unicoi State Park Lodge

Unicoi Lodge restaurant

The Unicoi Lodge has a couple of dining options for you during your stay.

The Smith Creek Tavern is a casual restaurant and bar offering southern cuisine. Perfect to catch the game and sample local and regional craft beer, wine and signature cocktails.

My Unicoi burger here was outstanding as were the huge pizzas with creative toppings.

We loved playing shuffleboard and our girls became quite the pool sharks, running out to play games while we relaxed over drinks and adult conversation.

We love vacations that cater to both adults and kids like this one did.

Guide To Visiting the Dirty Dancing Festival, Lake Lure https://www.ytravelblog.com/dirty-dancing-festival-lake-lure/ https://www.ytravelblog.com/dirty-dancing-festival-lake-lure/#comments Mon, 10 Apr 2023 01:40:00 +0000 https://www.ytravelblog.com/?p=71520 If you happen to be in Lake Lure in August, then you may want to check out the Annual Dirty Dancing Festival, which is a fantastic day event full of fun and laughter, beach bands, food, beer and wine, and of course, lots and lots of dancing!

It’s not just about the dance performances though, you can also take part in dance lessons, build crafts with craft vendors, and finish off with the Lake Lift Competition which reenacts the iconic scene where Patrick Swayze lifts Jennifer Grey in the lake.

This was a party where people knew themselves. There was no searching or seeking, playing with their hair, or pursing their lips, it was just a place where everyone could have a feel-good time and celebrate this iconic movie.

If you’re thinking you’d like to visit the Dirty Dancing Festival, then keep reading to find out more about it and how you can attend…

About The Dirty Dancing Festival Lake Lure, North Carolina

What a pretty place to host the Dirty Dancing festival

Lake Lure’s Dirty Dancing Festival is held every year in August in Lake Lure. Dates for 2023 are yet to be announced. It takes place in the Hickory Nut Gorge, on the spot where the actual movie was filmed.

The basketball courts make way for a huge stage where dance lessons take place, and the grassy lawn becomes an outdoor cinema.

Activites you can expect on the day are watermelon-carrying races, amateur shag competitions, Kellerman’s Festival Talent Show, a lakeside film screening (of course) and finally, the annual Lake Lift competition.

Each year, only 2,500-3,000 tickets are sold so you need to book ahead if you want to secure your spot.

Check out the official website for more details.

Our Experience At The Dirty Dancing Festival

4,000 people coming together to relive the memories and the one liners.

I carried a watermelon. “Nobody puts baby in the corner.”

Tell me you haven’t said a Dirty Dancing line a hundred times with your best friends.

The only movie to rival it in my personal movie rerun history was Girls Just Want to Have Fun.

I’ve seen Dirty Dancing at least 20 times, and the last dance scene when Johnny takes baby from the corner to do the lift at least 100.

peopel dancing on stange

On our Dirty Dancing tour of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock State park in Western North Carolina, we were told it was a low budget film.

Many scenes of the movie were shot on location at Lake Lure, even though the movie was set in the Catskills.

They filmed all the staff quarters such as the boys’ camp and Johnny’s cabin, just behind where the festival is held and there is contention as to whether the lake lift scene was filmed in this beautiful North Carolina lake or somewhere in Virginia.

We do know Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze practiced in the waters of Firefly Cove on Lake Lure anyway. And they stayed in the Lake Lure Inn – their rooms heavy in demand for this festival.

The Lake Lure Inn and Spa where the Dirty Dancing stars stayed

They never expected the movie to do so well. But it became an icon. As was evident by the 4,000 people celebrating 30 years later!

It grabbed me. I longed for that life in that movie. When I think back to define what it was it gave me, I think it was less a longing for love or romance, but more a longing for discovery, for adventure, for the experience.

That’s what the Kellerman’s Resort and the Dirty Dancing gave me.

The hope that life could be different. That you could express yourself and as a result of that take yourself out of the corner and leap high into the air. That the good guy would win, that class didn’t matter, and you fought for what you believed in.

And of course, it gave us a brilliant soundtrack and sweaty, sexy dancing with gorgeous men. Who did not fall in love with Patrick Swayze in this movie?

We travel in the USA to explore more deeply and uncover the hidden secrets. This festival was one of them. Like the movie, it was just good fun.

It wasn’t anything dramatic or special, but it gave us all an opportunity to relive the show.

Check out our video of Caz participating in the watermelon races below:

The highlight of the festival was to watch the lift competition in the lake, just around the corner from where Baby and Johnny practiced in real life.

The participants were focused and determined to stay up in the air the longest and win that coveted crown. We even had a marriage proposal and everyone cheered and were so happy he did not lose the ring to the sucking mud underneath.

man lifting girl up in competition

The pretend Johnny informed us of one myth from the show – the lift is actually harder to do in the water.

But aren’t we so glad they pretended it was. That chemistry between Baby and Johnny was amazing, even though apparently they didn’t like each other in real life.

That chemistry between Baby and Johnny was amazing, even though apparently they didn’t like each other in real life.

We didn’t arrive on time, but they also have dancing lessons at the festival as well. In this part of America, they call it shagging!

Not the horizontal folk dancing kind that we know it as in Australia.

It was a scorching hot day at the festival, so to cool us down, we paired the heat with delicious cookie dough ice cream and local ginger cider from Noble Cider based in nearby Asheville.

I love anything ginger and it’s rare to find a ginger cider. I want to order crates of it.

After the lake lift, the festival ended, and everyone moved to one of the many after parties that happens at the resorts and in the Lake Lure area.

Other Dirty Dancing Film Locations in Lake Lure

As well as attending the festival, there are some other filming locations in Lake Lure that you can visit if you’re a fan of the movie. Though it was really only the ‘boys’ camp’ scene that took place in the area…

1. Esmeralda Inn and Restaurant

Our of group of journalists attending the festival had one stop to make before we hit the party – The Esmeralda Inn and Restaurant for dinner.

It’s a 125-year-old inn and the lobby has the original floorboards from the gymnasium where Baby and Johnny had their dance.

I didn’t notice that too much as I was too busy having a photo with the both of them.

Me and cardboard cut-outs are becoming a thing on this America Unplugged road trip!

The food was delicious, the company wonderful, and the views out over the mountains of North Carolina gorgeous.

2. Rumbling Bald Mountain Golf Course

We stayed at the Rumbling Bald Resort, which was the famous gold course where Baby interrupts her dad’s swings to ask for money.

During the festival, it had an after party on the beach with beautiful views of the lake.

The girls raced to meet me at the after party and told me they had watched the movie and the dancing in the restaurant of Rambling Bald while they waited for me to return. The color drained from my face, “Was the volume down?”

“Yes”

Oh thank goodness. They were some questions I was not ready to answer yet. Dirty Dancing was brave enough to tackle some serious issues back then.

Instead of questions, they leaped into practicing the legendary lift scene themselves.

30 years later, Dirty Dancing still gets under people’s skin.

3. Lake Lure Inn & Spa

The Lake Lure Inn and Spa where the Dirty Dancing stars stayed

Although none of the movie was actually filmed at Lake Lure Inn and Spa, it has dirty dancing themed rooms, so if you’re looking for somewhere to stay during the festival, check this hotel out.

You can stay in Johnny’s cabin or Baby’s bungalow. It was also where Patrick and Jennifer stayed during filming.

It also overlooks the landscape of Chimney Rock Village camp, where you can see the original lodging, dining hall and gym in the film. It’s also overlooking the staff cabins and actors stayed.

Our favorite place to stay in Lake Lure

aerial view of The Lodge on Lake Lure

The Lodge on Lake Lure is one of the most beautiful places to stay in Lake Lure. It was built in the 30’s as a retreat for North Carolina highway patrolmen and opened to the public in 1990.

It’s the only lakefront lodging in Lake Lure and offers a unique experience with spectacular views. The Tree Tops Dining Room has stunning views of Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut Gorge mountains. It’s the best way to start your day with a buffet breakfast and dinner is served Wednesday through Saturday evenings. See prices and availability here.

Final Thoughts on the Dirty Dancing Festival

Dirty Dancing Festival Lake Lure Asheville ballet

I was 12 when Dirty Dancing was released. Yes, That was 30 years ago. And yes, here I was celebrating that movie at an annual festival dedicated to it.

There was energy throughout the whole day, even at the Dirty Dancing after party, and I was stoked to be in the middle of it.

I remember following Savannah onto the dance floor after watching the Asheville Ballet dance to Be My Baby, Yes and Stay.

She was mesmerized. When the floor opened up to all of us she started tapping her foot and swinging her hips and showing off her best dance moves.

“Come dance with me Mummy.”

Not long after Craig drifted out with us, which finally convinced Kalyra to let go of her inhibitions and dance around with us.

We were making memories. Everyone was having the time of their lives dancing to live music, and so were we.

Don’t miss our post on more things to do in Lake Lure NC and Chimney Rock State Park.

]]>
Mardi Gras is a celebration of culture and community. It’s possibly the biggest festival in Louisiana, and especially in its most vibrant city, New Orleans.

Mardi Gras is a two-week-long event that starts before Shrove Tuesday and ends the day before Ash Wednesday.

It’s famous for its colourful parades, dancing, drinking culture, loud music, and excitement. People from all over the city, and even the world, venture to the French Quarter each year to see the biggest parades and celebrations happen.

How to Enjoy the Mardi Gras Festival in New Orleans with Kids

It’s become more famous over recent years for its partying aspect, which is why many people were shocked when we said we wanted to do Mardi Gras New Orleans with kids.

But you know what, those people don’t know what we know…Here’s how you can experience the magic of Mardi Gras with kids!

We visited Mardi Gras in partnership with the New Orleans Convention & Visitors Bureau to help showcase the family spirit of Mardi Gras.

In this guide, we’ll share with you some tips and places you most want to visit with your kids to have that family-friendly Mardi Gras experience in New Orleans.

Can you take the kids to Mardi Gras?

We loved Mardi Gras in New Orleans

“Don’t take the kids to Mardi Gras in New Orleans” they said. “Are you sure you want to go to Mardi Gras with kids?”

We heard this way too often when talking about our trip to New Orleans with our kids for the Mardi Gras Festival.

It was very similar to when I first fell pregnant with our eldest daughter Kalyra and everyone wanted to tell me my travels were now over.

“Um, why?”

We set out to prove them wrong, and many years later we have done an excellent job of that!

So when people said that Mardi Gras was not a place for kids, we set out on a road trip from North Carolina to Louisiana to prove to everyone that you can enjoy the New Orleans Mardi Gras Festival with kids.

Yes, it’s well known for its debauchery and boob flashing on Bourbon Street, which is the only place NOT suitable for kids.

But Mardi Gras New Orleans is much more than Bourbon Street as we’ll show you below, and it wasn’t in our plans to ever take the girls there.

One thing we know is true, if there are children living in the destination you are visiting, odds are there will be a family-friendly angle to any festivals or experiences you are seeking in that destination.

I’m pretty sure they don’t ship out all the children who live in New Orleans on floats before Mardi Gras starts.

And I’m pretty sure the kids would love to participate in something so culturally rich, colorful, and exciting as Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

So fear not venturesome parents, Mardi Gras with kids is possible, and immense fun.

How to Prepare For Mardi Gras New Orleans with Kids

Our kids have voted the Mardi Gras Festival as one of the best things to do in New Orleans with kids!

The day we left our kids were already talking about coming back to visit New Orleans next year during the festival. They had the best time and really want to make it an annual event.

You know kids are the best gauge for whether a travel experience was worth it or not!

The best way to have an amazing Mardi Gras experience is to come prepared. Here are three simple tips to do that.

1. Get Your Mardi Gras Costumes

family posing in purple masks and Mardi Gras Costumes

We love how Americans embrace so many opportunities for dressing up in costume. Don’t skip this part to Mardi Gras.

Dressing up in costume will make it a more fun and memorable experience.

Our girls were so excited as soon as we bought our costumes a week before our trip. It put them in the spirit straight away, which continued until the last love heart tattoo was put on their cheek.

The traditional Mardi Gras colors are purple, gold and green.

Feathered, sequenced masks are popular costumes for Mardi Gras as well as hats and scarves. You can find more than enough to wear at your local Party City.

Do your research to see if there are any other themed costumes for any of the parades or events you are attending.

We were attending a private love bug themed party on Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras day).

Thankfully, the Mardi Gras parade this year was close to Valentine’s Day so there were plenty of loved themed colors and costumes for us to choose from at Party City and Walmart.

We’re saving our love bug costumes for Halloween this year. You can easily dress up in your Halloween costumes for Mardi too.

2. When is Mardi Gras? Have your dates locked!

When is Mardi Gras and how long does Mardi Gras last? In case you don’t know, it is a two-week festival, and the Carnival season begins in January or February each year.

The official start to the Carnival Season is midnight on January 6th, the twelfth night after Christmas, so you may see some pre-Mardi Gras celebrations in the run up.

The Mardi Gras dates change each year as it is dependent on when Ash Wednesday/ Easter Sunday is which of course changes every year.

Most visitors plan to arrive no later than the Friday or Saturday prior to Mardi Gras Day (Fat Tuesday) and stay through to Ash Wednesday.

It’s important you plan ahead and work out what parades and events you want to attend, and book early as accommodation fills up fast!

This is the weekend when Bacchus and Krewe of Endymion, two of the biggest parades of the season, roll down the streets of New Orleans.

The Bacchus parade is said to be amazing, and the all-female Krewe of Muses Parade on Thursday before Mardi Gras Day is also one to check out.

Check out these gorgeous shoes from the Muses parade!

For families, look to the Mardi Gras Parades Uptown, such as Krewe du Vieux or Krewe of Proteus, in Metairie, Marigny, or on the North Shore or West Bank, which are more family-friendly.

The Garden District is calmer with smaller crowds and a more family–friendly atmosphere, particularly along St. Charles Ave. between First St. and Napoleon Ave.

No big parades go through the French Quarter due to size restrictions. The French Quarter is not the best area to see the parades with kids.

3. Talk to your kids about Mardi Gras

woman and girl posing in fairy costumes

What is Mardi Gras? Mardi Gras, also called Fat Tuesday, refers to events of the Carnival celebrations beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday.

We spoke to the girls about what the Mardi Gras experience would be like in New Orleans.

They knew Bourbon Street was the adult’s playground and we wouldn’t go near there.

Kalyra really had no idea what could be seen there, but she was terrified of it, simply by all the people who commented about it.

A few days after Mardi Gras, when we stepped foot on the street to visit the Voodoo Shop, she almost burst into tears and begged us to take her off Bourbon Street!! Ha-ha.

Little did she realize we pushed her down the entire length of it in a pram when she was two!

I recommend staying away from Bourbon Street with kids during the festival, especially at night, but you can pop in for a quick stroll during the day any other time.

But, I would make it quick and go down the quieter end at the western side of the French Quarter.

Also, Royal Street in the French Quarter which runs parallel to Bourbon Street, is more family-friendly with nice cafes, galleries, boutique shopping, and artist shops.

We explained to our kids that Mardi Gras is really a celebration of diversity and love and that if they see anything strange, to accept that it’s okay and not stare.

Of course, they could not help but giggle and stare when they saw their first male dressed as Elsa, but once that was out of their system they were fine.

To plan your trip to Mardi Gras with kids, check the official tourism website for Visit New Orleans for up-to-date information.

We’ll have more tips down below to help you have the best Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) experience yet.

But first, let’s look at the amazing parades.

What To Do At Mardi Gras New Orleans with Kids

wom and costumed men waving to crowds on Zulu float

We visited during the last two days of the festival.

Fat Tuesday is the last day of the feast before Ash Wednesday. As a born and raised Catholic I know all about Lent and the Catholic Easter traditions, which is what Mardi Gras celebrations are about.

I only wish I was able to celebrate Easter in such a festive way growing up in Australia.

It was always a more somber event focused on giving up what you loved for 40 days during Lent. I love how this celebration focuses on the feast before the famine.

Fat Tuesday in Australia is called Pancake Tuesday. The tradition is to fill up on pancakes before Lent begins. We’d always have pancakes with lemon and sugar on them and it was something I looked forward to.

But, the Fat Tuesday parade is way more fun, especially for kids who will love trying to catch beads and doubloons to keep as little trinkets. Be sure to pack a picnic feast!

So here are the parades and experiences we had during Mardi Gras on Fat Tuesday and the day before.

1. Zulu Lundi Gras Festival

crowds listening to music on stage

The Zulu Lundi Gras Festival is free and open to the public and held on the Monday before Mardi Gras day, which is known as Lundi Gras, or Fat Monday.

It’s a fun day of food, live music, and arts and crafts in Woldenberg Park along the New Orleans riverfront.

There were three stages of performers and plenty of African and Cajun-inspired food stalls, Zulu costumes, and party atmosphere.

Grab yourself some crawfish nachos, Cajun fries, alligator sausage, and a pineapple lemonade, and enjoy the festivities.

King Zulu greeted everyone on the stage to get us all excited for the Zulu parade the following morning.

King Zulu waving to crowds from stage

There were great cheers when we heard it was going to be much warmer for Fat Tuesday as it was very breezy and cold on the waterfront.

We arrived at the end of the day, so the girls felt a little overwhelmed by all the people and the festive spirit.

So we moved on to wandering the lower part of the French Quarter to look at the costumes and street decorations.

2. The Krewe of Orpheus Parade

illuminated float

Harry Connick Jnr is one of the founders of the Krewe of Orpheus, which explains why we saw him on one of the first floats that came through.

Krewe of Orpheus is one of the three Super Krewe parades, which are said to be the best parades in the city. They are Krewe of Orpheus, Krewe of Bacchus, and Krewe of Endymion.

If the crowd noise wasn’t so loud, you’d probably hear me screaming, “Oh my God. That’s Harry Connick Jnr. It’s Harry Connick Jnr”, as he stood three meters in front of (and above) throwing beads in our direction.

The Krewe of Orpheus was founded in 1993 and takes its name from the musically-inclined son of Zeus and Calliope. Celebrity guests tend to appear on the floats each year, so keep your eyes carefully tuned in.

We had insider knowledge that the best place to view the Orpheus Parade was on Tchoupitoulas Street.

We went to the corner of Poydras Street and Tchoupitoulas Street and thought we must have had it wrong as there was barely anyone around.

crowds on street watching marchin gband in Orpheus Parade

We walked up to St. Charles Avenue where the parade had just started to float by, right near our accommodation at The Whitney Hotel, and there were hundreds of people.

It was our first glimpse of the floats. They were brilliantly lit and so colorful and elaborate with beads flying out from every direction and the crowds screaming, “Over here!”

We decided to turn around and go back to Tchoupitoulas Street and hope that the parade route was accurate and wouldn’t change.

It did take almost another hour before it got to us, but it did, and we were right in front of the line. Surprisingly it was cold, but we had fun waiting and chatting with the people around us.

And it was well worth the wait.

illuminated float in the Orpheus Parade

The girls were amazed at how beautiful it was and took to bead catching immediately. There’s no experience like it.

We couldn’t believe the number of beads and toys that were being thrown out and we were delighted with each successful catch. With the bitter cold of the evening, and the thickness of the beads, our fingers and hands stung with each catch.

Elaborately decorated dragons, crocodiles, and octopus’ floats rolled by in between crews of marching bands and people holding flaming torches.

The girls’ favorite float was the Smoking Mary, which is a six-unit float that looks like a steam locomotive.

They caught a football, a few stuffed teddies, and a mask among the bounty.

After an hour and a half, Kalyra dragged Craig back to the hotel as her feet were freezing (wear appropriate footwear if it’s cold) and Savannah held me down to stay with her.

She was hooked and did not want to miss a float. Mardi Gras is certainly her kind of party.

3. The Krewe of Zulu Parade

painted black and white faces of the krewe of zulu parade

Get up early on Fat Tuesday to start the celebrations with the Zulu Parade along St. Charles Avenue. It begins down near the Garden District.

We started walking down the parade route at 8am and it was filled with people already camped out in their positions with chicken cooking over the grill and drinks cracked.

I loved walking through the crowds and soaking up the atmosphere, although we did feel a little out of place in our pink and red love bug costumes in a sea of purple and green traditional Mardi Gras colors.

people watching costumed parade

I’m sure people were wondering if we were lost. But, really, when at Mardi Gras, anything goes.

The more flamboyant your costume, the better. Spend time checking out the costumes of the revellers on the street!

We were headed towards Third Street for the Rex Parade which starts at 10am after the Zulu Parade, so walked almost to the starting point of the Zulu.

The streets were full of people roaming and talking and barbecuing and playing ball and having loads of fun while they waited for the parade to come to their area. It was all positive and happy.

We met up with the parade a few blocks short of Third Street where we would be positioned for the Rex Parade.

We managed to grab a place right on the street curb.

The Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club (founded 1916) kicks off Mardi Gras Day in a vibrant and festive way.

It’s historically an African-American group that parades in blackface and grass skirts. They also have many floats, including the iconic sparkling King and Queen Zulu floats.

The Zulu coconut is the most prized possession of the Zulu float throws which Savannah managed to grab (read the tip section down below to see what she did with it, lol).

4. The Krewe of Rex Parade

For the most family-friendly Mardi Gras with kids experience, head to St Charles Avenue in the Garden District.

It was filled with families so was a little less wild but still had a great festive spirit.

people standing out the front of a New Orleans home in the Garden District

The road is much wider here too, so you felt like you had a lot of space and it’s so pretty experiencing it under the gorgeous oak trees that line the street.

crowds walking down street in the Garden District in New Orleans during Mardi Gras

The Garden District is one of our favorite places to visit in New Orleans and one of our favorite neighborhoods in the US.

We were so grateful to be invited to a private party for the Dickie Brennan Restaurant Group. Everyone was so warm and welcoming. It was fantastic to join their gathering and get dressed up for their themed Love Bug festivities.

We began with a few drinks and nibbles at their house which was right on the parade route.

We then walked a few steps out onto St. Charles Avenue near the intersection of Third Street where we had a spot with ladders for the kids to sit on and catch the beads.

We were a bright pocket of red in between the festive Mardi Gras colors.

families on side of the road watching parades dressed in red

The Rex Parade is considered a centerpiece of the Mardi Gras festival because of Krewe’s rich and colorful themes, elaborately decorated hand-painted floats, and male maskers in original costume floats.

The Krewe Of Rex has held more parades than any other organization and is the origin of many Mardi Gras traditions, including the official Carnival colors of purple, green, and gold, as well as the collectible doubloon coins, which one of King Rex’s page boys handed to us (introduced by Rex in 1960).

The Krewe of Rex is one of the oldest Mardi Gras Krewe’s, originating in 1872.

float in mardi gras parade

Each year a new King is chosen, usually, an influential resident involved in multiple civic causes and philanthropic pursuits.

His identity is kept secret until Lundi Day (the day before Mardi Gras) when the mayor hands over to Rex a symbolic key to the City to Rex for Mardi Gras Day.

We were standing outside the Rex House on St Charles Avenue, which is where one of the original King Rex’s once lived.

They have a big party each year, and King Rex’s float always stops outside this house for about 15 minutes. King Rex goes into the Rex House for a toast with the family inside.

King Rex waving on float at the Rex Parade during Mardi Gras colors.

I was lucky to be invited by a family friend to peek inside the Rex House and sneak in a whisky sour – one of the favoured drinks of the festival, alongside the early morning Bloody Mary.

There is a different theme each year for the floats, although some floats are permanent like The Beouf Gras – the big bull -which is symbolic of the giant feast before Lent.

This was one of my favorites.

The 2018 theme honored New Orleans Tricentennial year showcasing elements of the city’s rich history and culture and the people, places, and events that shaped America’s most unique city.

Some of the float designs honored “Father Mississippi” and the indigenous people who first lived here and concluded with a float depicting Andrew Jackson and the Battle of New Orleans.

Placed at intervals throughout the parade are masked horsemen – his majesty’s lieutenants. They wear gold-trimmed velvet uniforms of red, purple, and gold.

Thankfully people were handing them drinks under the hot sun!

man in gold costume on horse in parade

Throughout the parade are many marching bands and processions from the best high school, colleges, and military. They bring a colorful musical vibe to the parade.

marching band in parade

It was fascinating to experience Mardi Gras with the locals and learn all about the traditions.

I would say this area for Mardi Gras is more of a local experience than a tourist one, so this is the perfect place to come if you are looking for that feeling.

Everyone seemed to know everyone else and they all had friends on the floats. We met many people and heard lots of fun stories. It really enhanced our Mardi Gras experience.

5. The Krewe of Elks (aka The Truck Parade)

decorated truck throwing beads to crowd

Just when you think the Krewe of Rex is the last parade, coming up behind it is the loud and crazy Truck Parade from the Krewe of Elks.

The Elks Orleans is a group of over 50 individually designed truck floats on flatbed trucks and is formed by 4,600 male and female float riders.

We wouldn’t have known about it if it wasn’t for our local friends telling us to check it out. They also told us there is a competition each year for the best truck and the winners are the ones you’ll see first in the float.

Small trucks come down the street honking their horns and decked out in bright colours, banners, streamers, and loud music.

The beads continue to be thrown out as well as cups and a few more interesting things we collected like hula hoops and play spears.

We followed the Truck Parade back down St. Charles Avenue to our hotel. The girls were thrilled by it, and despite a full day of cheering and bead-catching, raced up to the front to yell for more.

Tips for Attending Mardi Gras with Kids

Mardi Gras New Orleans is great fun and definitely a memorable experience for the whole family. But before you go, there are just a few words of advice we want to leave you with.

First…

1. Download the Mardi Gras parade tracker. This is an app that tells you the parade schedule. It was a bit confusing at first to understand as there are a few different markers on there, but you will soon get the hang of it. It’s quite handy if you want to move from one parade to another. If you can see where one ends, you may feel like you’ve had enough and are ready to move to the next parade.

2. Get there early to grab a spot. It may mean waiting around but make an experience out of it with your chairs and coolers full of food and drink. It will give you plenty of time to take photos of your costumes and soak up the atmosphere. We loved walking down the road before the Zulu Lundi parade watching everyone throwing balls around, cooking food on their personal grills, and checking out all the cool costumes.

3. I recommend going to the start of the parade route for a spot. Then you won’t have to wait for a very long time for the first float to appear.

4. The largest audience comes out for evening parades, so head out earlier if you’d like a lighter crowd.

5. Have a restaurant/café break in between your parades. It’s great to refuel, especially for bathroom breaks and when it’s cold like it was for us on Orpheus Parade night.

6. Bring a bag with you – a large bag – so you can carry all your bounty home.

7. Bring along a ladder, complete with a seat on top. It makes it easier for the kids (the smaller ones) to see and catch the bounty. If you can’t bring one, you may get lucky and have one offered to you to use. Be sure you get your child up and down safely and keep it back from the curb. You don’t want it getting swiped by a passing float.

8. Watch your children (and yourself) if they’re standing right on the curb. Be sure they don’t jump out with excitement as floats are passing by. They are pulled by tractors. There are usually people walking past pushing crowds back to ensure they are a safe distance from floats and passing marching bands, which take up more road space.

9. Have a safety, and meeting place plan in place in case your kids get lost! Keep them close by and a close eye on them. There are big crowds and a lot going on.

10. Prepare your kids for the crowds. Our girls were a little freaked out at first by the number of people. They liked the Rex Parade best because of the extra space and calmer nature.

11. Watch those flying beads. They can be large, which means they can really hurt if they hit you in the face. I had a whack on the head which stung, so you can imagine if it hit a small child. The family-friendly parades are a little more careful in passing beads rather than throwing them really hard … sometimes.

12. Don’t let your child hold a coconut bounty on top of the ladder in case they drop it on an innocent lady’s head and it breaks! Thankfully she was okay about it and thrilled that her head was able to crack open the coconut. Savannah was mortified that she accidentally dropped it, as was I!

13. Be prepared for changing weather. We were freezing on the eve of Mardi Gras and then hot on Mardi Gras day. Bring your umbrella just in case.

14. Take time to learn about the historical and traditional significance of the parade, masks, and colors—gold for power, green for faith, and purple for justice—or take them to Mardi Gras World to learn about krewes and see how the floats are built. It’s not just about catching as many beads as you can.

15. Bring plenty of snacks and water. Crowds will be huge and food opportunities may be scarce.

16. Stay in accommodation close to the parade route so you can duck back if you need. You won’t find many restrooms along the route and many hotels will have wristband identification for guests, so you won’t be able to sneak in. If you plan ahead and can afford to splurge, look for a hotel on Tchoupitoulas Street with a balcony where you can view the parade from. We stayed at The Whitney Hotel.

17. Avoid driving and using Ubers/taxis. Many roads will be blocked off and traffic will be chaotic. It will be quicker to walk in most instances. We walked from our hotel just outside the French Quarter on Poydras Street (near the intersection of St. Charles) to First Avenue in the Garden District for the Rex Parade, which only took about 30 minutes.

You won’t be able to drive in the city centre during the festivities, so we recommend getting a transfer from the airport to your hotel in the French Quarter, and walk for the duration.

18. Be aware of trash. We were told that the success of a Mardi Gras is often determined by the weight of the trash collected. The trash will be intense. I felt awful leaving it on the ground, but I was told the street sweepers are excellent and follow the last truck and have the city spick and span in no time.

19. Schedule in the televised event so you don’t miss it! On the evening of Mardi Gras, Rex will cross Canal Street to join the Comus Ball (the oldest Mardi Gras Krewe) and when the monarchs have all made their exits, the Captain of Comus literally closes the curtain on the Carnival season. This event is televised live. Our new local friends told us about it being a tradition for many New Orleanians to stay up to watch. We planned to, but totally forgot!! I recommend scheduling it to close out your Mardi Gras experience. Cuddle up in your bed and watch it with the kids.

20. Book tickets in advance. You need to have a ticket to watch the Mardi Gras New Orleans parades and each parade has its own fee. Prices range from $10 to $70, so it’s best to pick and choose which ones you want to see and book your tickets early.

Before You Go

So there you have it, this is how you can enjoy Mardi Gras New Orleans with kids! As you can see, there’s a lot of fun to be had and it’s not all about drinking and partying.

Before you go, make sure you plan as much ahead as possible; hotels, transport, tickets etc. This will help you have a smooth time when visiting.

Oh, and don’t forget to try a King Cake, a delicacy of the event. It’s sometimes referred to as a “three king’s cake” since its inception refers to the three kings who bought gifts for baby Jesus.

The cake is a blend of coffee and cinnamon and is often iced in the colours of Mardi Gras; yellow, green, and purple. Sometimes it will be filled with fruit or cream cheese.

As they say in New Orleans, “Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler” which translates to “Let the good times roll!”
